Rund um die Nürnberger Altstadt - CDM/1.1Germany, September 10-, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 2 - September 10: Women's World Cup final, 116,0 kmSchleicher takes final round in front of home crowdBy Kristy Scrymgeour World Champion Regina Schleicher pleased local fans of the Nürnberger team today, taking out the final round of the Women's World Cup in the team's home city of Nürnberg. Schleicher pulled off the win in a bunch sprint over T-Mobile's Ina Teutenberg and last year's winner Giorgia Bronzini (Italian National Team).
The overall World Cup Series had already been decided prior to today's final round, with Nicole Cooke of Univega holding a strong lead over T-Mobile's Judith Arndt after the penultimate round in Rotterdam last week. The final round, despite offering double points, therefore had none of the pressures of previous years and became a race whereby anything could have happened.
The race was held over 11 laps of a 12km course taking in the city streets of Nürnberg and looping around the beautiful walled in old town. The crowds were huge and the weather was a big improvement on last year. From the race start attacks were plentiful but the race looked to be controlled by the sprinters teams. Univega, put in a few good attacks, with Priska Doppmann opening a significant gap mid race, but she was reeled in with a couple of laps to go.
Then it was Swedish rider Emma Johansson (Bizkaia-Panda Software-Durango) who made a move. With a lap remaining she still looked strong with over 30" on the field. The chase was in full swing however and despite a crash on the finish line with a lap to go, Equipe Nürnberger and T-Mobile managed to close the gap and Jahannsson was caught with less than 2km to go. Judith Arndt took the lead making the pace high for the sprint. Bronzini went first with Teutenberg coming round. Schleicher came round with only 50m remaining to take the win, pleasing the crowd and the team sponsors enormously.
"I am incredibly happy with this win" said Schleicher after the race. "That was my last chance to win a World Cup race in the World Champion's jersey. This win is very important to our team. Today we wanted to have a big win in front of our home town crowd and it is sensational that it all came together for the team!" Nicole Cooke finished in fifth extending her overall lead and taking home the World Cup Series Trophy for 2006. T-Mobile's Ina-Yoko Teutenberg moved back up in to second place overall with her second place in today's race and Annette Beutler (Buitenpoort-Flexpoint Team) finished 9th today, moving up in to third place in the World Cup Series. Most of the Women's peloton now head straight to Tuscany for the final tour in the lead up to World Championships.
