Jayco Tour of Tasmania - NEAustralia, October 24-29, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 9 - October 28: George Town, 39 kmBad tactics may cost CarlstromBy Rod Morris in George Town Canberra power unit Robert McLachlan let history repeat itself when he won the George Town criterium, Stage 9 of the tour. McLachlan has been an absolute success story since coming out of retirement 3 ½ years ago. He has already twice won the Tattersall's Cup and will finish second to Tasmanian Wesley Sulzberger when this year's series concludes in Launceston on Sunday. Whilst he had a disappointing Tour of Gippsland, McLachlan has bounced back to win the Tour of the Murray River and has kept pressure on Sulzberger and company in Tasmania this week. He won Stage 2 from Grindelwald to Beauty Point, Stage 4 at Westbury and Stage 8 in Sheffield before winning again at George Town in Stage 9. McLachlan won the same stage in the 2005 Tour of Tasmania, but he was in far better conditions than yesterday. Strong cross, head and tail winds kept riders on the alert for the full 39 km and whilst McLachlan wasn't overly interested in the intermediate sprints, he kept himself safe for the final sprint. Tour leader Kristian House however did take interest in the early part of the race as he saw it is a chance to pick up valuable time on his nearest challenger, Kjell Carlstrom (Finland). House started the day 12 seconds ahead of the Fin, but by winning six sprints and placing in another, was able to push his advantage out to 27 seconds. The finish to the criterium was a familiar sight, McLachlan versus Sulzberger. But a full-in-flight McLachlan is an awesome vision and not too many cyclists in Australia can match his top end speed, even a much lighter Sulzberger. Flashing home for third was 17-year-old Shepparton rider, Ricky Peoples, the younger brother of Scott, who is third on the GC leaderboard.
