Jayco Tour of Tasmania - NEAustralia, October 24-29, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - October 24: Launceston - Grindelwald, 49.9 kmHouse takes early morning openerBy Rod Morris in Beauty Point Englishman Kristian House confirmed his status as one of the pre-race favourites by winning the opening stage of the Jayco Tour of Tasmania. House (27), a member of the Great Britain Olympic track squad is turning his attention to road racing and was an impressive winner of the 49.9 km race from Launceston to Grindelwald in the West Tamar. House was part of a five rider breakaway group that formed just 10 km after the riders left the start and was never caught. The only casualty of the escapee group was South Australian Simon Pearson, leaving House, Victorian Sean Finning, Queensland's David Kemp and local Tasmanian Tim Walker to fight out the stage. Kemp is a genuine contender for the Tattersall's Cup series, which concludes in Tasmania this week after previous multi-stage tours in the Gippsland and Murray River regions and the three-day Australian Cycling Grand Prix at Ballarat. Tasmanian Wesley Sulzberger entered yesterday's opening stage holding a 29-point lead over Canberra's Robert McLachlan and a further 21-points to Kemp in the Tattersall's Cup and there is plenty of interest surrounding that competition, while the Tour of Tasmania itself will evolve into an entertaining battle also. Once the breakaway group re-entered the West Tamar highway after skirting through Rosevale and Bridgenorth, House decided to make his winning move. "I wasn't absolutely sure of the terrain at the finish and I wasn't too sure about the climbing and sprinting ability of the three riders with me, so I thought if I go now and try to get away from them and take my chances," House commented. "In the end it worked out perfectly for me and I suppose the easiest way to get into the leader's jersey is to win the opening stage."
