Cooke wins in Austria

Baden Cooke won the mass sprint to take the first stage of the Peace Race Saturday in Schrems, Austria. The Unibet.com rider crossed the finish line ahead of Sebastian Siedler (Milram) and Danilo Hondo (Lamonta) in a time of 3:29:04.
The stage was not without its problems. According to the race organizers, "Some riders from non-European Community countries forgot their passports, so that they were held up on the border." Then, at the end of the race, the police directed the entire field in the wrong direction. In addition, local hero Gerhard Trampusch of Team Wiesenhof-Akud had to cancel his start at the last minute, because he is suffering from a very bad cold.
"I thought that I would probably win," said Cooke. "Since it probably won't be enough for an overall victory, I hope to maybe win another stage." Second-place finisher Siedler said, "On the one hand, I'm satisfied with my placing. On the other hand, my teammates worked so well that they earned the win."
Sunday's second stage is 177,3 km, from Schrems, Austria, to Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic. It has three intermediate sprints and has no mountain ratings, although the terrain is rolling.
