Gord Fraser (Health Net-Maxxis) continued his NRC point accrual in the first road race of the Joe Martin Stage Race, winning the uphill field sprint ahead of Ivan Stevic (Toyota-United Pro) and Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly.) Health Net-Maxxis, who won a stage and second overall at last week's Tour of the Gila with only three riders have doubled their team size, giving Fraser a little more breathing room. "The guys did a lot of work to bring the break back," said Fraser. "It was a tough day. We only have a six-man team here... but we are used to that now!"

With a homage to the biggest company in the state, the 110.8 mile course began in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart. It featured rolling hills for the first 73 mile, leading to the 11 mile climb up Mount Gaylor -- totalling 1,350 feet. From there it was a gradual downhill back to Fayetteville.

An eight rider break was the biggest threat today, but since it contained Fraser's teammate Nathan O'Neill, the team did not worry too much. "We had Nathan up there, and with an uphill time trial [tomorrow] it was good," said Fraser. Then the race reached the climb and things changed. "It shook out a breakaway and out of those eight guys are the ones we ended up having to chase. The onus was on us to bring it back."

Into Fayetteville, the speeds were high until the final turns where the race rolled and climbed 150 feet in less than a mile. "Sean Sullivan attacked and Caleb Manion went too, but I covered it," Fraser explained. "He kept Sullivan close and brought him back to a reasonable distance. When I took off he was catchable. Stevic sprints uphill quite fast, but I was able to hold him off."

Jelly Belly has a lot of hopes for this race annually, as it is nearby to their bike sponsor's home in Little Rock. "Orbea is based here so we like to come out and give a little show," said third place Alex Candelario. "The finish was pretty hard actually because there are these rollers before it that soften the legs. I was over-geared unfortunately."

Tomorrow features two stages -- a 92 mile road race and a time trial. The road stage consists of three 23 mile loops, totaling 1,500 feet of climbing per lap. The time-trial is a 2.5-mile uphill course in Devil's Den State Park with an average grade of 6.8% and a strict time cut which should shrink the 200+ rider field a little leading into the tight and technical criterium finish on Sunday.

Friday morning the pro women’s field arrived equipped with full squads ready to take on one another in the 2006 Joe Martin Stage Race. The 66-mile first stage was an aggressive race all the way to the end as Colavita Cooking Light’s Tina Pic barreled to the finish line for the win followed by TEAm Lipton’s Laura Van Gilder and Colavita Cooking Light’s Dotsie Bausch.

Cyclingnews spoke with Colavita Cooking Light Team Director Sportif Jim Williams about his team’s efforts. “I think Joe Martin is unique because it starts off with two road races, not a prologue, making the racing aggressive from the start. Today’s race was highly aggressive and all the teams should be proud of the way they raced,” said Williams.

Race winner Tina Pic said that having three riders in the top five was, “a really good position to be in. It is really great to have three of us in the top five. Sue did that amazing lead out for me and she hung on for fifth so that is amazing. It gives us so many cards to play with for the coming stages.”

A front group of thirty riders came into the finish ready to sprint. “Attacks were coming left and right coming into the finish,” said Pic. “Sue drove it to the finish for me with the help of Kori from Lipton. I knew it was a far sprint so I sat on Laura for a little coming out of the last corner. I timed it to come around her about half way up the hill – about two hundred meters to go. I remember the sprint being long and up hill it is such a grind.”

Runner up Laura Van Gilder described the finish of the race as being, “a long sprint and I decided to go first, therefore I was passed my Ms. Pic. That is the risk you take sometimes. We are happy with today’s outcome but we also hope to turn it around in the next races – of course winning is better than second. We have a small team here and I think we need to pick and chose our battles carefully. My team did great work and I have them to thank."

There were two significant breaks, the first initiated five miles from the base of the climb by Leigh Hobson of Victory Brewing. Brooke Ourada of Colavita Cooking Light and Charm Breon of Cheerwine later bridged to join Hobson.

Williams said, “All the teams rode really well today. We had a sense that Victory Brewing would be aggressive in the beginning. We wanted to make sure that if a break went we were represented to make Webcor work before the climb. Brooke was able to bridge to Leigh and this forced the other teams to do some work on the climb.”

Over the top of the climb Erinne Willock of Webcor, Dotsie Bausch of Colavita Cooking Light, Rachel Heal of Victory Brewing and Kori Seehawfer of Lipton drove the new break for the next 20-miles but were brought back ten miles to the finish by Nurenburger’s Kate Bates and Team Cheerwine.

Tomorrow combines both stages two and three beginning with a sixty mile challenging road race followed by a 2.5 mile up hills time trial.
