Tour of the Gila - NENew Mexico, USA, May 3-7, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 5 - May 7: Gila Monster Road Race, 100 milesBaldwin and Armstrong take overall at GilaDonald wins stage while leaders watchBy Mark Zalewski with additional reporting from Kirsten Robbins The final stage of the Tour of the Gila, affectionately known as the "Gila Monster," is a 106 mile roller coaster with five categorized climbs, many more non-categorized climbs and another climbing finish. While race leader Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United) sat on second place Scott Moninger's (Health Net-Maxxis) wheel all day, a young rider by the name of Jason Donald rode away to the biggest win of his young career. "I've been racing with him around Colorado all spring," said Moninger. "He and his teammate Garcia are runners from college. They have been training and 9,000 feet so they are aerobic animals. It was just a matter of time before he got a big win like that." Donald stayed with the leading group until the final climb, which is really just a steep uphill finish stretch, and took advantage of the leaders hesitation. "He attacked at the right time. The last climb is about a 500 meter sprint, but it gets pretty steep," said Moninger. "It was a good move on his part. Nobody had too many teammates so it was every man for himself." Moninger sprinted for second place, taking a small time bonus -- but right on his wheel was race leader Chris Baldwin, who took the third bonus, securing his win. "I just tried to stay on his wheel and that was enough," said Baldwin. "I wanted to try to do something more today, but I'm over the top of my peak fitness wise, so I was trying to focus on the task at hand." Baldwin owes a lot to his team who controlled the race most of the week -- something that Moninger did not have. "Scott Moninger really was the strongest in the race, but we had the stronger team. It was a piece of cake for me and really hard for all of my teammates. I don't feel like I won the race, I feel like my teammates won the race. I'm amazed at some of these young riders like Stefano Barberi -- he was still on the front with ten miles to go." Most of the NRC riders like Moninger are headed to Arkansas for the next two weeks to race the Joe Martin and Tri-peaks Challenge stage races. Armstrong flies up Gila climb to stage and overall winTEAm Lipton's Kristin Armstrong rode further away with the pink jersey on the monstrous 20-mile finishing climb of the last day of the at the Tour of Gila, to take both the final stage and the overall title. Rachel Heal (Victory Brewing) and Anne Samplonius (Team Biovail) followed Armstrong home, at 51 seconds and one minute 15 seconds respectively. Armstrong's victory came at the end of a highly tactical stage involving involving a break away with a chase to the bottom of the climb followed by a game of cat and mouse amongst the top five general classification riders, Kristin Armstrong (TEAm Lipton), Rachel Heal (Victory Brewing), Anne Samplonius (Biovail), Erinne Willock (Webcor) and Dotsie Bausch (Colavita Cooking Light). Third placed rider, Anne Samplonius, said she was, "excited to see the women race their bikes today and that a break got of the front." The race essentially began after the first intermediate sprint of the day won by Rachel Heal of Victory Brewing. Heal gained ten seconds that moved her into fourth place on the general classification. After the sprint, a flurry of counter attacks resulted in a group of eleven riders driving off the front of the peloton, powered by Webcor's Amber Rais. All teams would have been happy to let this break go except that it contained one rider, TEAm Lipton's Kori Seahaffer, who was lying second in the general classification. In the break were many independent riders in the field looking for the opportunity of a stage win. Samplonius said that Biovail's tactics at this point were motivated by similar considerations to other teams. "When the break was off we were a little concerned about Kori being in that because she can climb and she was only 3.5 minutes back on G.C." However, Argon and Victory Brewing were not satisfied until the break was brought back completely before the climb. "We only had four riders on the team so we don't have enough horsepower to let the break get too far ahead," said Samplonius. "We decided to help control it by sending two girls to the front. We didn't necessarily want to bring them back we just wanted to keep it at less than a minute. With the efforts of the three teams it was under control." At the base of the climb Webcor's Erinne Willock made her move by attacking and bringing race leader Kristen Armstrong (TEAm Lipton) with her. "My plan was to try to get as much time on Anne Samplonius as possible to gain back second place on G.C.," said Willock. "I had to attack at the bottom of the climb because that was the steepest and best part for me. I was hoping to gain time on her but she caught me on the caught me on the rolling/descending portion of the finish, something I was afraid of happening, but I had to try." The duo made it to the top of the initial climb when Armstrong attacked and left Willock behind with approximately 15 miles to go to the finish. Armstrong increased her overall lead on the climb winning the race by one-minute over second place Rachel Heal. Once it was clear Armstrong was not coming back, the race was on between second, third and fourth place G.C. riders. "I just sat and kept the pace high and we caught Erinne with five miles to go. It was just Rachel Heal and me at that point because Dotsie fell off the back of us just before the long decent. I knew she was coming off and it was good for me because I that meant if she was dropped Rachel would work with me to catch Erinne while maintaining her fourth place G.C," said Samplonius. The heat was on during the final five miles of the race as Heal and Samplonius regained contact with Willock. "Anne and Erinne were almost at a track stand keeping an eye on each other once we all came together. They were concerned with each other because they were battling for second place on G.C. I took advantage of this and attacked them both. Once I saw that I had a gap I continued my race to the finish line for second place in the stage," said Heal. The battle between Willock and Samplonius continued all the way up to 500-meters to go. Willock tried several attacks to ride away from Samplonius with out success. Samplonius sensed the fatigue in Willock's legs and attacked her, taking third in the stage. Willock said, "Anne is riding so well and that is great. I tried attacking her so many times and I couldn't get away. After playing cat and mouse she fired one final attack and I was just fried and that was it for me."
