Tour of the Gila - NENew Mexico, USA, May 3-7, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 4: Silver City to Mogollon Road Race, 92/70 milesMoninger, Armstrong On Top of MogollonMoninger closes in on BaldwinBy Mark Zalewski with additional reporting by Kirsten Robbins Scott Moninger (Health Net-Maxxis) knows the Tour of the Gila well. The multiple-time winner especially knows how hard this race can be with thousands of feet of climbing over the five days. And as he won today's mountain-top finish just ahead of stage one winner Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United), the effects were obvious. "It was like a bomb went off behind us," Moninger said. Even though Moninger does not have the team support that Baldwin does, he does have his own cards to play, including knowledge of the race and being well-rested. "Unfortunately I don't have a lot of teammates," he said. "But it's a bit of an advantage because Baldwin hasn't done this race before. I've also been home for a few weeks training at altitude. So I am probably a little fresher. This is part of the build-up for some tough stage races next month." Toyota-United, with their eight riders, set the tempo all day. "Wherry has done this race a couple of times and he came up with a good plan. We didn't worry about small breakaways, and we put a bunch of our younger guys on the front and they did an incredible job." "We knew with Baldwin in the lead we were going to have to set tempo," said Justin England. "We let a break of five guys go and kept that gap steady. We were confident that the pace tempo would bring it back up the climb." As the race reached the final 5.5 mile climb, the long breakaway that existed for most of the stage was on its last legs. "I was out front when Scott and Chris came by and that was just under a mile to go," said Michael Lange (TIAA-CREF.) "It just fell apart after that." Baldwin, holding a forty second lead on Moninger in the overall, just followed Moninger's wheel to the top. "Wherry gave me the sweet spot going into the final climb," said Baldwin. "I was just trying to stay with [Moninger] but he has won this race so many times. We call it the Scott Moninger Invitational!" Moninger does gain some time back in the form of time bonuses and a small gap at the finish, but he knows that the only place to make a serious move for the win will be Sunday's epic stage, with more than 9,000 feet of climbing over four major climbs. "I have to pick and choose where I can pick up time and make some gains. It was a bonus for winning, but more importantly I put some time on the guys behind me. Tomorrow is usually a field sprint, so I don't think much is going to happen. A lot of guys start thinking about Sunday which is a make or break stage." The difference may come down to teammates, in which case the advantage clearly falls to Toyota-United, with Health Net-Maxxis only racing with three and not even qualified for the team competition. "I think if I was able to climb well today that it will just be the same scenario," said Baldwin. "We have so much depth and more riders, so that is an advantage. But those guys are tough competitors." "I'll just bide my time and hopefully I won't be in a situation where we will need a lot of team support," said Moninger. Women: Armstrong takes over big lead with big effortAfter a surprising second place in the stage one time trial, U.S. time trial national champion Kristin Armstrong (TEAm Lipton) turned her placing into an advantage as she rode into the lead by winning the climb to the top of Mogollon. "It was nice going into the race today with out the leaders jersey," Armstrong explained. "There is always a lot of pressure on the team if you have the jersey so early or on the first day." "Our team goals were to not initiate anything today," said Armstrong. "But, also to always be represented if any breaks did go so that we were not stuck working." However, with temperatures above 35c today, the field was content to take it easy and get to the bottom of the final climb together. That is, until the second time bonus sprint. TEAm Lipton was leading it out for Armstrong when a crash took out half the field. "I got caught up in it the accident," said Webcor's climber Erinne Willock. "I had to get a bike change and then my teammates did a great job getting me back on. My bike is totally broken -- it happened close to the front so a lot of riders went down." Reports also indicate that at least two Diet Cheerwine riders and Kate Sherwin (Victory Brewing) were also involved, with one Diet Cheerwine rider sent to hospital via ambulance. Sherwin did finish, riding through injuries and heading to hospital following the stage. Not usually known for her sprinting, Armstrong earned additional time with both sprint bonuses today. She attributes her new ability to her track racing with the team this spring. "The pursuit has really helped me with my capacity to sprint better. I went for all of the sprints today because I wanted the time bonuses as a safety net." After the remainder of the field reformed, all attention was focused on the last 5.5 miles of climbing. "We wanted to get the climbers to the bottom of the final climb fresh so that if any attacks went at the bottom they would be fresh enough to cover them for me," said Armstrong. "Once we got to the bottom of the climb Victory Brewing initiated several first attacks that got the ball rolling and people chasing. The pack started to dwindle and then surges began again." When the climb came I glued myself to Kristins wheel," said Willock. "I was able to stay with her for the most part. Victory Brewing took turns attacking on the climb making Anne and Dotsie chase them back -- then the climbers got singled out. Kristin did some acceleration and got rid of a lot of the girls. With 1 k to go she pulled away she was just in sight. She just had a stronger climb than me." "I really decided to just stay at my own pace because the climb was so long," Armstrong explained. "Closer to the top it was Dotsie Bausch, Anne Samplonious, Erinne Willock and me. Dotsie dropped off and thats when I also saw Anne having problems with the pace. I picked up the pace a little until it was just Erinne and me. I put in one more surge and thats when Erinne fell off. I didnt want to take any risks so at that point I just rode my own pace up the rest of the climb." Thanks to her strong climbing, Armstrong put sixteen seconds on Willock today. Combined with the twenty-five second of additional bonus time over her and 1:12 of combined bonus and time gap on former racer leader Anne Samplonious (Team Biovail), Armstrong holds a commanding lead. Except for these two, the rest of the field is more than three minutes down on Armstrong. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Jonathan Devich/epicimages.us
