Tour de Toona - NEUSA, July 24-30, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 7 - July 30: Altoona criterium, 48.3kmArmstrong, Lagutin retain overall in Toona finalWomen: Armstrong shines in yellow; Lyons takes the stageBy Kirsten Robbins in Altoona, PA Victory Brewing's sprinter Brenda Lyons convincingly won the dash to the finish line in today's criterium and final stage of the Tour de Toona. Aaron's rider Rebecca Larson held off Colavita-Cooking Light's Tina Pic sprint for second and third. "Our goal was to just wait and sit on wheels to the end," said Brenda Lyons. "Laura Yoisten and I have been working together all week trying to go after points. We decided that our role today was to save it all for the finish. We felt that going for the intermediate sprint was not going to be as effective as saving our legs for the finish line." Aaron's sprinter Rebecca Larson launched herself from the field with two corners to go of the criterium, catching the field by surprise. "The last lap was kind of hard because everyone was going for those bonus sprints and didn't have much for the end," said Tina Pic. "Laura Van Gilder led it out from the downhill and Brenda was right on her wheel. We were all fighting to get behind Brenda when out of the second corner Rebecca Larson jumped, which was brilliant of her, and Brenda got on her wheel." "Laura Yoisten and I almost wiped out in the final corner," said Pic. "By the time Yoisten and I finished bobbling around in the corners, Brenda had a really big gap and she was gone. I ended up third today behind Rebecca." Lyons admits that today's circuit was a difficult one. "Today was a tricky race and you can go from second to twentieth or tenth to first in the blink of an eye coming into a finish like this," said Lyons. " But it was a lot of work to race against these girls all week and it has brought my racing up a level for sure." TEAm Lipton controlled the front of the field before and after a mishap on the fourth lap of the race. The accident saw the yellow jersey, Kristin Armstrong, unscathed and rolling down to the wheel pit with fifteen other casualties. "We were organized at the front when coming through the first corner and a couple of the girl's wheels touched," said TEAm Lipton's Meredith Miller. "Kori, Kristin, and Kristen all went down behind it but it did not affect our race at all. No one was hurt and everyone was fine so it actually got our adrenaline going a little bit. I think the accident made Armstrong want to sit even closer to the front. It didn't change our game plan at all." TEAm Lipton's game plan was to maintain a steady tempo at the front of the field allowing Armstrong to finish the criterium safely in the yellow jersey. "Our team was willing to let a break go but some of the other teams weren't," said Armstrong. "So we did what we could and a break didn't get a way so we finished safely together." Although the criterium was full of activity TEAm Lipton remained unbothered by the action happening around them. Many of the attacks going on around the yellow train were from riders who grasping for any remaining time bonuses as a chance to move further up on GC. "Riders between sixth place and fourteenth place were only separated by seconds and would be going for the time bonuses today," said Victory Brewing DS Mike Tamayo. "That is why we wanted half our team to focus on the finish only." Armstrong brought her team the yellow jersey at the end of a tough week. Her time through out the event continued to grow to six minutes and fourteen seconds over second placed Canadian National Champion/Biovail's Alex Wrubleski and seven minutes and two seconds over third placed Webcor-Platinum's Erinne Willock. "We wanted to leave this race totally together as a team," said Armstrong. "Working great together and leaving with good team vibes." Armstrong not only left the race with the yellow but with the polka dot's as well. "My initiative was not to go after the QOM jersey," said Armstrong. "The only jersey that was important to us was taking home the yellow jersey and it was a great team effort. Our team is very well balanced we have our girls who can climb well, sprint and race well on the flats so it was a big team effort and I am so excited about that." Colavita-Cooking Light's Tina Pic wore the green jersey for the entirety of this week's race. Pic locked up her lead on the point's competition by winning the intermediate sprint for points. "We were really trying to go for the stage win today and to keep the green jersey too," said Tina Pic. "I won the intermediate points sprint and so I had the green jersey locked up then and that took a lot of pressure off of us for the finish." Men: Navigators defends attacks, Wamsley takes sprint winBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Altoona, PA Criteriums that end stage races do not often decide a week-long race. But unlike the women's race at this year's Tour de Toona the time gaps for the men were measured in seconds, not minutes, at the top of the overall. With Navigator's Insurance's Sergey Lagutin in the yellow jersey, it was up to Toyota-United with Chris Baldwin and Health Net-Maxxis with Karl Menzies to unseat the Uzbekistan national champion. The Navigators team put all hands on deck today and successfully defended their race lead despite the best efforts of Menzies and Baldwin, while Kyle Wamsley (Colavita-Sutter Home) took out the stage win. "We had to take what we got when the crap hit the fan!" said Navigators Insurance directeur sportif Ed Beamon. "We worked everyone today." Toyota-United and Health Net-Maxxis had two diverging strategies for the same end goal today. With Baldwin only three seconds behind Lagutin, the numerous intermediate sprint time bonuses were the ticket. For Menzies, the strategy was to go all out and get up the road to erase as much of the forty-second deficit to Lagutin, while taking time bonuses along the way to make up the rest. And everyone knew everyone's strategy, so it was wait and hang on for dear life. "We wanted to get me the time bonuses," said Baldwin. "We got the first one, and that is a testament to my team. We took a lump of coal, made it a ruby -- but we really needed a diamond. We got beaten by a more complete rider." "We were all or nothing today," said Health Net-Maxxis DS Jeff Corbett. "We were going to get the time gap up enough or die trying." "We still wanted to win," said Menzies. "We had a plan and it went to plan!" Menzies did go up the road along with teammate Greg Henderson, three Colavita-Sutter Home riders, Frank Pipp (TargeTraining) and Andrew Bajadali (Jelly Belly.) But Navigators put their entire team on the front, including the sprint and KOM jerseys, for an all or nothing effort to keep the time gap within twenty seconds. "Hendey just blew [the other riders] off trying to get the time gap," said Menzies. "Everybody on the team bled for it today -- we went down swinging!" As the laps counted down, so did the split between Menzies and Lagutin. And each lap another Navigator would swing off having given his all on the day. Finally, the catch was made and the field prepared for the final laps. Into the bell lap, Ryan Trebon (AEG-Toshiba-JetNetwork) and 2005 winner Scott Moninger (Health Net-Maxxis) jumped, with Kyle Wamsely (Colavita-Sutter Home) responding. "We started to get caught before the second turn, so I attacked again," Wamsley said. "I had Jonathan Page and Vicktor [Rapinski] on the front of the field so I knew I had time. Moninger jumped me with three turns to go, so I got on his wheel and came around him." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Mark Zalewski/Cyclingnews.com
