Tour de Toona - NEUSA, July 24-30, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - July 28: Martinsburg circuit race, 123.6 kmBreakaways take the day at ToonaWomen: Miller wins break sprint; Lipton keeps Armstrong safeBy Kirsten Robbins in Martinsburg, PA Team Palo Alto's Brooke Millar redeemed her bad luck yesterday to take the sprint win out of a six-rider break. Millar was pushed hard past Webcor-Platinum's Felicia Gomez and Colavita-Cooking Light's Sarah Tillotson. "I was confident that if that break stuck that I would be able to take the win," said Miller. "So, I was busting my butt to make sure that break stuck. None of us were threats on GC. Sarah Tillotson has a really good sprint but I knew that she was working really hard earlier to bring that first break back so she would be tired." The winning break also included Equipe Du Quebec's Emilie Roy, Biovail's Jennifer Stephenson, Victory Brewing's Christina Ruiter, TEAm Lipton's Liza Rachetto, and Advil-Chapstick's Anna Milkowski. It split off the front of the field during the final lap of Martinsburg's stage five: a flat, four-lap circuit totaling 76 miles. The split was formed after a series of attacks initiated by Team Biovail and resulted in an eight-rider split. "Biovail set up the break by attacking three or four times after the feed zone," said Brooke Miller. "There was a small hill and that is where the main attack went. Once there was a gap we all worked really well together." Unfortunately the eight-rider break dwindled to six with under-ten kilometers to the finish. Milkowski fell off the back over the last climb toward the finish and Ruiter suffered from a mechanical. A early threatening break went up the road containing GC threats Team Biovail's Anne Samplonius and Victory Brewing's Rachel Heal. "There was a convincing break early on that had my teammates Grace and Laura in it but it was my decision not to have them work," said race leader Kristin Armstrong. "Mostly because yesterday Grace lost a minute on GC because of a flat tire. With Ann and Rachel up there gaining a minute more going into the tomorrow wasn't good for us - I don't want to have to watch five people tomorrow up the climbs." The early break was chased back by a combination of effort between Colavita-Cooking Light and TEAm Lipton. "The first break was really intelligent because it happened when the rain was pouring," said Tillotson. "People were so distracted by the weather that they let the break go and they got a big gap. That break had so much strength in it with that we had to chase so hard with the help of Lipton and it was a hug relief to be able to be brought back." "The new break was the right combination of riders down on GC so we liked that break. I knew with Brook in there it would be a tough sprint and Felicia looked so strong that they definitely deserved to take first and second." Coming into the final corners of the race Tillotson took the lead and with 200-meters to go Millar and Gomez were able to get around her at the line. "I am certainly not a designated sprinter but I knew Brooke was going to be the one to beat in the break," said Gomez. "I had to be on her wheel so that is where I was when she jumped around Sarah and Liza. But I needed more that 200 meters to rev up my fast twitch fibers. She beat me by half a bike length and for me that is really good and I am happy that I hung in there." The stage offered point sprints at the completion of the first three laps. Colavita-Cooking Light and Victory Brewing contested the first and third sprint while the second was scooped up by the early break. Colavita-Cooking Light remains the leader of the point's competition, wearing the green jersey. Victory Brewing's Rachel Heal raced climb-free today because there were no QOM's to contest. The climber's competition will resume in tomorrow's ninety-two-mile Altoona-Blair County Road Race. Men: Van Ulden wins out of first breakaway at ToonaBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Martinsburg, PA Finally the racing in the Tour de Toona did not end in a field sprint, as a group of four strong riders lasted more than 70 miles. In the end it was Bernard Van Ulden taking the sprint ahead of last year's stage winner Mark McCormack (Colavita-Sutter Home). "It was a perfect day for our team," said Van Ulden. "This is my first pro win -- in a sprint of all things! I think of myself as a time trialist. We knew that Health Net was chasing and we were lovin' it." "It was a flawless break - no monkey business," said McCormack. "Everyone pulled equally." The break also contained Scott Zwizanski (KodakGallery-Sierra Nevada) and Jeremy Powers (Jelly Belly). "I attacked first and then a group of ten of us was established," McCormack said of the break's inception. "We got caught and Scott Swizanski rolled off the front and I jumped to bridge to him with two more guys on my wheel. It was a four-rider break starting from less than five miles into the race." At one point the break had over three minutes, but McCormack had a mechanical. "I broke a spoke and unfortunately we had over three minutes. The guys were kind enough to wait for me. I was motivated to help the break and we had two more laps to go." Health Net-Maxxis was on the front all day, but in control. "We didn't care about the break that much," said DS Jeff Corbett. "It was a take it or leave it thing. We weren't going to kill ourselves to get it. We brought the gap down to a manageable level and if the field wanted it they could go and get it. It would have been nice to go for the stage win but tomorrow is too critical to burn up people today." On the final lap of the circuit Jeremy Powers fell off the pace. "We all had some serious horsepower so it was a great break," said Zwizanski. "Everyone worked great together. We were all so strong and had our different reasons for working. Jeremy has been sick most of the year and that is why he fell off but before that we were al doing equal share." On the final lap the break was brought down to less than a minute. "The gap was coming down so quick and it was such a hard head wind coming back in town," said Zwizanski. "I chose my spots to try to attack earlier because my strength is not sprinting." The tough and technical run-in to the finish was made even more difficult with wetness on the road. "Coming into the criterium section Ed told me to be the last guy starting the turns," said Van Ulden. "McCormack is experienced and he was definitely the favourite to win. If we could some how get him to lead out that was good. He was dropping back a bit to charge us. I knew he was doing that so I started jump too at the same time and I got on his wheel. It was really hard to get passed him and it was so close-half a wheel." "Scott went through all the corners with two corners to go," said McCormack. "The streets were wet and I thought we might slide out. I took the lead going into the final corner and Bernard was on me immediately. He did a good job sticking with me and he beat me in the sprint. Bernard deserved the win as much as anyone because we all worked together." Even without the win, Van Ulden had rolled through on all the intermediate sprints and had enough to take the lead in the green jersey competition -- something that is just a side benefit with the stage win. "The jersey is not a likely competition for me to be involved in but because I have been in long breaks this week I am collecting [points.]. I'm here for the team and to help with the overall that is our number one goal." Race leader Karl Menzies relied on his team today to keep him out of the wind. "I touched the wind for about five meters at the finish but the rest of the team had to work hard," he said. "The break was no trouble as long as it stayed with in a couple of minutes. Swizanski was three minutes down on GC so as long as we kept the time below that we were fine with it." "Tomorrow is the day where I could win or lose it the jersey," Menzies continued. "The team has been riding so hard and I have to work hard tomorrow. We have ridden awesome here and we are feeling strong. We will try to get the whole field over the hill and have a bunch sprint. It will be a different finish from Wednesday because there are still two KOM's after the biggest climb." Jeff Corbett is cautiously optimistic about his team's chances tomorrow. "It is going to be a hard day tomorrow. But I am sure everyone is waiting for tomorrow and will take their shot at it. Everyone knows we have cards to play for the GC and we know what the other teams cards are too, it is not a big mystery, we have to try to break them or try not to let them break us." One thing everyone seems to agree on is the level of competition this year. "I've never done this race before but it is so great that there are strong riders here," said Menzies. "There are fifteen guys that are potentially dangerous to the overall. It is great for the competition and the race is a whole lot better when there are so many strong teams racing. It raises the race up a level!" PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Mark Zalewski/Cyclingnews.com
