Cascade Classic - NEBend Oregon, USA, July 12-16, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - July 13: The Center-McKenzie Pass RR, 80 milesZirbel wins the stage; Wherry wears yellowBy Kirsten Robbins in Bend, Oregon Priority Health's Tom Zirbel took the stage win over Navigator's Sergey Lagutin and Toyota-United's Chris Wherry in a tactical finishing climb. Wherry's third place in today's stage was enough to hang on to the leader's jersey. "I would have loved to have won the stage today because my team did a great job," said Chris Wherry. "But sometimes protecting the yellow jersey means you have to give up a stage win. I am happy to still be wearing yellow. We showed that we are one of the strongest teams out here." Stage winner Tom Zirbel attributed his success to his team Priority Health for keeping him in good position during the race and into the final climb. "I played the race very conservative today," said Zirbel. "We wanted to keep good position and so my teammates did an excellent job helping me out with that." Zirbel out-climbed many of the best-known climbers racing in the U.S. "I was just following wheels the whole way up," said Zirbel. "I knew I had to be patient and that I couldn't hold a gap on such a long climb. When it got close to the finish I wanted to look for opportunities to attack and I found it with 1500 meters to go." "I'm sure Wherry was watching the Navigators riders which worked in my favour. Sergey and Wherry were coming at me hard toward the finish. I didn't think I had it won at any point until I crossed the line." During the first twenty miles of the 81-mile stage, an eighteen-man break rode off the front of the peloton. The break included two Health Net riders Gord Fraser and Doug Ollerenshaw, two Toyota-United riders Ivan Stevic and Heath Blackgrove amongst others. The break stayed away until the first KOM at the fifty-three mile mark. "We new the early break would come back because it was a bad break for Navigators," said Toyota-United directeur sportif Harm Jansen. "It was our plan to put our riders in the breaks today to take some pressure off of our other riders. The break was good for us because Navigators had to work to bring it back." Wherry commented on the early break as being a big loss for the Navigators team. "Navigators only had one guy in the break who was far back on the G.C. and our two riders were high up on G.C. It took them a while to get organized because I don't think they realized how detrimental it was for them." "They had a lot of ground to make up but once they got going they were riding pretty hard to bring that back. They caught the break on the way up to the first KOM sprint. At that point our team took over and tried to control things until the final climb." The final half of the race was a gradually increasing grade. There were several attacks that resulted in breaks but the field remained intact at the base of the final climb to the finish. "We had a couple guys from the team setting tempo to keep things contained," said Wherry. "Health Net started the attacking and Baldwin and I had to cover some of those moves. With in ten kilometers to go it was just Baldwin and I in a group of fifteen." "Health Net continued to attack and so did Navigators. Baldwin did a great job pacing things back for me and he drove it to the last kilometer. Tom attacked and stayed away to win. At two hundred meters to go Sergey jumped for the sprint and I just stayed on his wheel to the end." Tomorrow the men will compete in stage three of the 2006 Cascade Cycling Classic. The Pacific Power Cascade Lakes RR will be a ninety-mile stage finishing on another mountaintop. "I think that tomorrow's stage will be similar in that we will want to protect the leaders jersey," says Wherry. "The time trial is where some of the general classification might change. There are some good time trialists here and so I will want to race well there and not lose time. Also the final circuit race is a really tough course. It will be hard for teams to control the race there. Hopefully that day will come down to a small group in the end." Women: Lasasso climbs to first NRC win and jerseyBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor TEAm Lipton's Kristen Lasasso scored her first NRC victory today, and made it a big one, winning the opening women's stage of the Cascade Classic. The new addition to the race was a tough climbing finish to theDee Wright Observatory with a rolling and windy seventy miles preceding it. Lasasso won the stage out of a group of four riders that had put more than five minutes on the field. With her in the break was Kirsten Robbins (Victory Brewing), Hiroko Shimada (Velo Bella-Kona) and Amber Rais (Webcor). "Two girls attacked ten miles into the race, and my teammate Kristin Armstrong told me to chase it down," said Lasasso. "Everyone was spread across the road and it was tough to get through. She said if I didn't get up there in thirty more seconds she was going to have to go! But I made it through." When Lasasso began her ride across, Victory Brewing's Kirsten Robbins went with her. "I was supposed to stay towards the front because we knew it was going to be windy today," said Robbins. "I was in a break just prior to that one but it came back. And when Kristin went I happened to be there." A fifth rider was also in the break but suffered a mechanical. With the four off the front, the time gap went up as the race approached the final climb. "Everyone was working really well together, even at the start of the climb," said Robbins. "Kristen and I both knew the other two wouldn't be able to stick it up the climb. We just set tempo and they fell off at the beginning." The field was also finally making some headway as the wind began to take its toll on the now two leaders. In her mind, Lasasso was remembering the advice Armstrong had given her, saying that if she was ever working in a break, she had better be able to out climb or out sprint everyone in it. "Kristin always told me that if I was in a break you either have to win or just sit on and not work, so I kept telling myself, 'I have to win, I have to win!'" Past the half way point of the climb, Robbins was unable to continue pulling through. "A little more than half way I couldn't pull through any more because it was too windy. [Lassaso] was so strong, she just rode away." Robbins was able to hold on to her second place, 2:10 behind Lasasso. Additionally, she will wear the QOM jersey tomorrow as she is tied with the race leader on points. Lasasso's teammate Kristin Armstrong led the field in for third place, thirteen second behind Robbins. The TEAm Lipton captain is certainly proud of her teammates win, and feels that this puts the team at a tactical advantage. "We are definitely in a great position, and it was really great to see her do well under the pressure. Unless things get really tough I hope to bring her to the last day in yellow. But I know tomorrow will be aggressive -- I think that Webcor and Victory Brewing will have a lot of girls attacking. With the time trial on Saturday someone to watch is Rachel Heal with her abilities. And with Webcor Betina Hold is also good time trialist."
