Men: Swindlehurst out climbs the break; Health Net takes yellow

By Kirsten Robbins in Bend, Oregon

The seven-mile finale up to Sunrise Lodge came down to a lead group of three riders - what was remnants of an eight-man break that began in the first ten-miles of today's ninety-mile stage: Navigators riders Burke Swindlehurst and Valeriy Kobzarenko came to the line taking first and second in the stage. Health Net's Jeff Louder came through in third and took the yellow jersey away from Toyota-United's Chris Wherry.

"Jeff Louder buried himself up the climb with five kilometers to go and Valeriy and I were the only ones that could stay with him," said Swindlehurst. "With 500 meters to go I attacked as hard as I could and carried it to the line. It was a satisfying day for me -- it is always great to win a race. Louder and I are friends and train together all the time in Utah so I was great to see one of my best friends get success as well."

Attacks were fired and a break of was able to get off the front early in today's stage. Through constant attacks from the peloton, multiple chase groups were reformed and within ten miles of the start a break of eight riders was solidified.

"We had Ollerenshaw and Louder, Navigators had Valeriy Kobzarenko and Burke Swindlehurst, Successfulliving Daniel Ramsey and Gordon McCauley, Colavita had Todd Herriott and Jittery Joes had Peter Hatton," said Health Net directeur sportif Jeff Corbet. "We wanted to put some dangerous guys in the break to force Toyota-United to chase."

"The break could have had a bigger gap but at one point Glen Chadwick from Navigators tried to bridge up so Navigators slowed down the break a little. The gap got to a maximum of three minutes and everyone was working well. It was a real good group. Louder worked the least because he had the most to gain and Ollerenshaw worked the most to make up for it."

Back in the peloton Toyota-United organized a chase that was able to catch the remaining five riders from the break up the final climb. "Toyota worked really hard all day and they did a great job," said Corbet. "They got the gap down to one and half minutes with ten kilometers to go. The workers on that team did what they could do and then Baldwin set tempo to chase down what was left of the break."

Toyota-United's Chris Baldwin and Chris Wherry along with Health Net's Nathan O'Neil and Navigators Sergey Lagutin were able to pass through the remainder of the early break. "Baldwin pulled for the last ten kilometers but with three kilometers to go Scott Moninger attacked and came in between the break and the lead three placing 4th."

Jeff Louder took over the leader's jersey by gaining approximately twenty-two seconds on Wherry in the stage -- five seconds ahead on the general classification.

"Everyone did what was probably expected today: for Health Net or Navigators to form a break and to put pressure on Toyota," said Corbet. "The only unexpected thing that happened today was that the break did not get caught. Usually the break gets caught and that produces a fireworks of attacks to the end."

"Everything worked out well for us today but Wherry is no slouch in a time trail. He can put together a really good time trial with a lot of horsepower. Nathan O'Neil, Jeff Louder and Wherry are all good time trialists so it will be a battle tomorrow because the time gaps are do close between the top five on the general classification."

Swindlehurst noted that Navigators is "focused on getting Sergey or Cesar to win the overall so we might have to sacrifice a few people to do it -- but hat is our ultimate goal."

"Today was the ultimate chess game with bike racing," said Swindlehurst. "It was a very tactical race."

Women: Armstrong wins the stage and LaSasso holds on to the leader's jersey

By Kirsten Robbins in Bend, Oregon

The second women's stage of the 2006 Cascade Cycling Classic finished on another difficult seven-mile climb to the Sunrise Lodge. The intense pace of Team Lipton's Kristin Armstrong shattered the peloton and dwindled the lead group down to only four riders by the top.

"Mainly Team Lipton wanted to keep Kristen [LaSasso] in the leader's jersey," said Kristin Armstrong. "I respect how much work she has done for me this year so I want to keep her in the lead until the end. It was a nice buffer going into the stage with second an third."

The stage began with a series of attacks during the first half of the race. Velo-Bella's Kelly Murden initiated an attack followed by Webcor's Amber Rais in a deja vu break away after yesterday's stage.

"Amber and I worked really well together," said Kelly Murden. "Amber is great to work with, she is a better climber than me but we are both strong in the break. She would pull up the rollers and I would pull on the flats. The goal of the break was to make Team Lipton chase as much as possible. I knew if we went up the hill together Armstrong could beat us every time so we had to at least try to wear her down."

The pair of riders maximized their gap to approximately two minutes before Team Lipton set tempo on the front keeping the break in check. "I knew that Victory Brewing and Webcor would be sitting up front and attacking today," said Armstrong. "When the attacks started after the descent we covered a few of them but then I told the team not to go after individuals anymore. There are so many motivated individuals here that people are going to try to go alone but it was too windy and hard."

"I knew Amber had a hard day yesterday so I wasn't too worried about the break staying away. Usually in the women's peloton the gaps grow from one to five minutes so quickly. I didn't want that to happen today. I wanted to keep a closer time gap before the climb."

Team Lipton organized a chase with approximately twenty-five miles remaining in the stage. "I put the team on front to set a nice tempo and bring the gap down to a minute," said Armstrong. "We didn't want to bring it back because we didn't want to get attacked again before the climb."

Coming into the final seven-mile climb to the finish the break was still being held at one minute by Team Lipton. "Once you hit the climb the situation just takes care of itself," said Armstrong. "Climbers just go when they climb so if we had a minute behind Amber it wouldn't take our teams energy to bring the rest back on the climb. The climbers would bring it back naturally."

Armstrong set a tempo up the climb with the help of Rio Grande rider Mara Abbott. The riders rode just hard enough to split a front group of four riders from the shattered peloton. "There was a little break of Rachel Heal, Dotsie Bausch and Mara Abbott," said Armstrong. "Kristen fought her way back to the second group and chased hard to minimize the time lost for the G.C lead. I slowed down to look back for her but she told me to keep going. She is very intuitive rider -- she looked at the scenario and realized she had to chase the lead group. Webcor had two riders that helped chase at first but then left it to Kristen to minimize the gap."

With one kilometer remaining the lead group took the right hand turn into the Sunrise Lodge. Armstrong rode in to take the stage win followed by Colavita-Cooking Light's Dotsie Bausch, Rio Grande's Mara Abbott and Victory Brewing's Rachel Heal.

Team Lipton's leader Kristen LaSasso fought her way to the top and remains in the leaders jersey approximately one and half minutes ahead of Armstrong. "My teammate Kristen kept the jersey and still has about a minute in the lead," said Armstrong. "There is still a lot of racing to go though. The time trial will be hard and the road race on Sunday has time bonuses so there is lot left. It is fun being in a different role and I am having fun racing my bike."

Armstrong also won both of the QOM points making her the new leader of the climber's competition.
