Cabreira steals it on the last day
João Cabreira (Maia-Milaneza) has seemingly come from nowhere to win the fifth and the final stage at the 32nd Volta ao Algarve, doing enough to take a win in the final classification. Run over a tough 183.4km from San Antonio to Alto De Malhao, Cabreira was able to break from the field during the final climb and put enough time into overnight leader Gert Steegmans (Davitamon-Lotto) to take the overall win.
Cabreira finished seven seconds ahead of Dutchman Robert Gesink (Rabobank), with André Vital (Madeinox-Brica-Canel) a further 14 seconds behind. Starting the day at 20 seconds behind Steegmans in the overall classification, a hilly parcours that saw riders register an average speed of just over 35km/h was the perfect opportunity for Cabreira to put 30 seconds into the lead of Steegmans, overtaking the Belgian to secure the final yellow jersey.
