Ponomarev unsettles Asian control

A typically mild and sunny day greeted the riders for the start of stage 2 of this year's Tour of South China Sea; an 88-kilometre circuit race around the suburbs of Shenzhen, China's original Special Economic Zone, and the richest city in the whole country.
Today's circuit was a fast and pretty straightforward 4.4 km semi circle loop, with nothing much in the way to slow things down and aid breakaway groups; so all looked set for another bunch finish.
As the racing got underway the pace soon wound up, and it was a constant fast moving and attacking stage, and until the second half of the race it looked very unlikely that anyone would stay away. Pocari Sweat Hong Kong in superbly dominant form; they were defending and controlling the race from the front with a constant high speed throughout the race. But as the day started to take it's toll a small group went clear, and opened quite a gap, but with just a handful of laps to go the hammer was well and truly put down and they were reeled back in.
A slight lull in the pace allowed a five-man break to go clear with three laps to go. For two whole laps they were left dangling off the front, nobody willing to commit to reel them in and allow another group to escape within the final minutes of the stage; a tactic which did not pan out for the Pocari Sweat team.

Russian Dynamo Moscow team manager Gleb Groysmann explained, "There are 12 Hong Kong riders between their two teams, and they work together so strongly to control things, and then there is just us and the Danes, so we thought it would be a sprint again, but [we] just had one rider in the break in case. With 2 km to go I called him on the radio to tell him the bunch were not chasing and to ride to the line."
And that's exactly what happened, in the final kilometre the remaining three riders in the break held on to a narrow lead, with Konstantin Ponomarev of Dynamo Moscow powering ahead for a clear victory.
With two back-to-back stage victories, and Ponomarev taking the leader's jersey from his team mate and stage one winner Andrey Klyulev, things look good for the team. But Pocari Sweat will be hot on the Dynamo's heels and Wong Kam Po desperate for victory you can rest assured the team will not have an easy ride.
