During the two first stages of the Circuit de la Sarthe-Pays de la Loire, CSC spent a lot of time in front of the bunch pacing together with T-Mobile. As well as training for the Tour of Italy, they both wanted to make sure that they would keep the time differences as tight as possible before the individual time trial. Once again, the Danish team has won the match against the Germans. Ivan Basso and Brian Vandborg made a flamboyant 1-2 whilst their opponents had to record 7th and 8th places with Sergey Gonchar and world champion Michael Rogers.
Vandborg is the new leader of the Circuit de la Sarthe-Pays de la Loire. He scored one second bonus yesterday, which allows him to be ahead of Basso by 7 hundredths of a second on GC. "It's a little surprise for me," the 25 year-old Dane said. "I was coughing last week and when I'm not riding, I don't feel good. It's also a surprise because I normally prefer long time trials. I hope to keep the yellow jersey but it's unsure yet. Stefan Schumacher is strong and fast."
Basso added, "The final win will be decided on bonus time." The runner-up of last year's Tour de France looked extremely happy after claiming the third win of his career in a time trial, the two first ones being at the Tour of Italy and the Tour of Denmark in 2005. That race in Angers was a test for him since the length of the course (8.8km) was quite similar to the one in Seraing for the prologue of the Giro.

"It was an important day for me," he explained. "I didn't have a lot of pressure for winning but I wanted to do my best for training, for the morale and for the attitude in a prologue time trial. Nine kilometres isn't my speciality, neither is a flat time trial the same day after a flat stage but it went well. I had lost the time trial at the Criterium International by only one second and today I won by only one second. That's life.
"For me, it's perfect. I have good condition, I'm really happy. It's going to be difficult for me to win the overall at the Circuit de la Sarthe. But we have a young rider in yellow jersey now. His focus is now and my focus is to train for the Giro, my other teammates as well."
Remember what Lance Armstrong did before winning his first Tour de France back in 1999? He won the time trial at the Circuit de la Sarthe!
