Grillo wins for Lancaster

A communiqué from race organization Circuit de la Sarthe-Pays de la Loire reported that Olympic champion Brett Lancaster had no fracture after his heavy crash during the sprint in stage 1, but it wasn't correct: his left collarbone is broken in four parts and he'll be operated only on Friday when the appropriate piece of metal will be available. But he received a nice message today at lunch time when his teammate from Panaria, Paride Grillo won stage 2 at the end of another bunch sprint.
"Without Lancaster, I was lost in the sprint," Grillo explained. "I found a little bit of space which allowed me to come out of the mist with 150 meters to go. That's why I won by so few centimetres."
This wasn't exactly the Italian style of sprinting. Grillo had to do everything by himself. "I prefer more regular sprints," he said. "With head wind, it was even more difficult, and without a train like we usually have in Italy, there's a need for some extra luck."
He didn't get any the day before, when he had a flat tyre with three kilometres to go. "Worst of all, I've lost Lancaster as a lead out man for the Giro, he added. And this is my main goal for this year." He came second to Alessandro Petacchi once last year. Both have in common to have started their career with the Reverberis' outfit.

Grillo is in his second year as a professional. He scored two wins in 2005 (stages in Circuit de Lorraine and Tour of Denmark). He now has two as well in 2006 after winning the GP de Rennes on Sunday. "I came out of Tirreno-Adriatico with good condition," he said. "I hope to maintain it till the Giro, although I know there won't be many stages for sprinters and the competition with Petacchi will be a tough one."
How it unfolded
Samuel Dumoulin (Ag2r) and Alexandre Pichot (Bouygues Telecom) attacked as the peloton exited the village of St-Mars-la-Jaille but they soon got caught. There was a three-quarter headwind riding in the direction to Angers. The whole bunch did it pretty quickly with CSC and T-Mobile setting the pace in the front. After 30 kilometres, Ruben Bongiorno (Panaria) had to pull out because of the consequences of yesterday's crash.
Yuriy Krivtsov (Ag2r), who was away in stage 1, increased his lead in the King of Mountains competition. During the final three laps in Angers on the circuit that will host the individual time trial this afternoon, Fabien Patanchon (Française des Jeux) and Pichot tried to break clear but there was no other way to end the stage but a bunch sprint. Grillo was boxed in with 100 meters to go but he rode around Alberto Loddo (Selle Italia) and Robert Förster (Gerolsteiner) who came 2nd and 3rd respectively. Förster retained the lead before the 8km time trial.
