Förster celebrates
Raisin, Farrar and Lancaster on the injury list

Robert Förster of Gerolsteiner claimed his first win this year in the village of St-Mars-la-Jaille, which is the place where Bouygues Telecom's Anthony Ravard grew up. The local hero who won stage 1 in the Circuit de la Sarthe-Pays de la Loire last year in the nearby town of Varade couldn't repeat his success, but came third in a sprint that was highly spectacular because of a massive crash.
"The last kilometre was extremely dangerous," Förster explained. "There were two sharp corners, but the sprint was not a problem for me. The crash happened behind me, probably in fifth or sixth position. Before that, my team had done a very good job. We had Georg Totschnig and Michael Rich controlling the bunch through the stage, then Stefan Schumacher was the last guy to lead me out with 300 meters to go. He crashed after giving me the way. I heard it but I didn't see it. I was in first position for the last 250 meters."
Förster wasn't very confident before coming to this race since he crashed while training last week, hurt his hand and was forced to reduce his preparation. He's gearing up again for the Tour of Italy where he was third twice last year in the bunch sprints.
Ivan Basso also has the Giro in mind. His CSC team rode quite a lot in the front today. "We have to get used to that before the Tour of Italy," directeur sportif Alain Gallopin said. Five of the CSC riders in the Circuit de la Sarthe-Pays de la Loire will line up in Seraing next month. There is another flat stage before the 8km time trial where Basso will be compared to world champion Michael Rogers of T-Mobile and the winner the ITT at the Criterium International, José Alberto Martinez from Agritubel.

But Juan Carlos Dominguez of Unibet.com will not be able to contest the time trial. He's one of the victims of the numerous crashes of the day. He went down with 10km to go and broke his right collarbone. With 2km to go, it was Saul Raisin's turn to crash heavily. The participation of the Tour of Italy is in doubt for the Crédit Agricole rider since he broke his left collarbone and a few traumas were reported: to his hip and face. He also lost consciousness for a little while. The final crash affected mostly Panaria's Brett Lancaster who had a thorax and collarbone trauma but nothing broken, and Tyler Farrar from Cofidis whose left collarbone was fractured.

Prior to the first bonus sprint of the day at km 40, Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Telecom) attacked, 12 riders joined but only one of them, Yuriy Krivtsov (Ag2r) continued with him. Pineau and Krivtsov got a maximum lead of 5'41 at km 54.
Pineau stopped and waited for the bunch at km 75. 31 kilometres were covered in the third hour! Krivtsov was still away alone with 30 seconds advantage at km 124 when Jérémy Roy (Française des Jeux) decided to break clear from the bunch. Only 8km further, the duo was 2'27 ahead.
CSC, T-Mobile and Panaria were the most active teams in front of the pack. They caught Krivtsov and Roy with 6km to go. Hot favourite for the sprint Paride Grillo (Panaria) punctured with 4km to go. A crash involved Saul Raisin (Crédit Agricole) with 2km to go. A major crash occurred 150 metres before the finishing line with ten riders down. Among them were Brett Lancaster and Ruben Bongiorno (Panaria), Tyler Farrar (Cofidis), Andre Korff (T-Mobile), Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner) and Giovanni Bernaudeau (Bouygues Telecom).
