9th Tour of Japan - 2.2Japan, May 15-22, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 6 - May 22: Hibiya city - Ooi Wharf Circuit Tokyo, 138.5kmNon c'e problema for the triple crown Cardenas in TokyoBy Miwako Sasaki in Tokyo Felix "The Cat" Cardenas became the first Colombian winner of the Tour of Japan today, while Australian Nicholas Sanderson won the final stage in a bunch sprint in Tokyo. The crashes happened in the peloton today, as there were strong crosswinds at the finish line and even though Sanderson was involved in an early crash, he took the second victory for the Australian national team, following Mathew Goss's success in Osaka. Many spectators gathered in Hibiya city, the start place for the final stage in Tokyo, and cheered the 85 riders off. The Ooi Wharf Circuit was shorter this year - it was 10.5km and pancake flat. There were many attacks in the peloton from the first lap of 17 on the circuit, and five riders including Japanese champion Yasutaka Tashiro (Bridgestone) gained about 40 seconds. Some riders, including Australian Simon Clarke, bridged up from the peloton and joined the five leaders at 8 laps to go. The peloton, which was always controlled by Barloworld, allowed about 50 seconds advantage to the breakaway until the final lap. When the bunch regrouped and started the sprint, there was a clash on the middle of the field. Clarke and James Meadley fell, but Sanderson was still first across the finish line. Heaven and hell for the Australians, but all's well that ends well. Cardenas finished in the bunch, and said, "Non c'e problema oggi (No problem today)" after the race. He finally captured all three jerseys, the red mountains, the blue points and the green GC. The triple crown was the first time, not only for Cardenas, but also in the history of the Tour of Japan. Australian team reportBy Brian Stephens, AIS U23 manager Today the AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team got their second win in this year's Tour of Japan. Nic Sanderson won the last stage in Tokyo in a bunch sprint after great work by the team throughout the stage. The guys had a man in nearly every break and took control on the last 7.8km lap to place Sanderson in a position to win. There were many crashes with Nic, James Meadley, and Simon Clarke all coming down as many riders were desperate for a result in this stage. Barloworld made sure that Cardenas was untroubled to hold his lead and take the win. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Miwako Sasaki/Cyclingnews.com
