Cardenas confirms his victory in Japan

Colombian Felix Rafael Cardenas (Barloworld) claimed his second win in the 9th Tour of Japan in the mountain stage in Izu, wearing the green leader's jersey. Cardenas finished 6 seconds ahead of Andrey Mizurov (Capec, 8th in the stage), who was second placed in GC. The Colombian has an advantage of 1'16 to the Kazakh now, and will ride relaxed in the final flat stage in Tokyo tomorrow.
The new stage in Izu started from the Japan Cycle Sports Center, an amusement and cycling facility. For the first time, the Izu Cycle Festival was also held in the center and the fifth stage of the Tour of Japan was one of those events. Before the start, Alberto Elli, director of Team Barloworld said, "Today's stage will be very tough. And Cardenas has only 1'10 advantage to Mizourov. It's a big problem. But, we, Barloworld are a very strong team. We will work hard today. I hope we can keep our leader's jersey."
85 riders started the race and the weather was fine, even a little hot. After the start in the center, the riders rode a 90km mountain course, including the Izu Skyline highway. The highway was closed for the cycling today for the first time, and there were also some races for amateurs. The riders could see Mount Fuji on the Izu Skyline. After the mountain course, the riders came back to the Cycle Sports Center and rode five laps of a hilly circuit.
Japanese Tomoya Kano (Shimano) attacked from the peloton at 5km, and he was followed by Kam Po Wong (Purapharm) and last year's GC winner, Shinichi Fukushima, with his teammate Yasutaka Tashiro (Bridgestone). The break managed to gain 2 minutes to the peloton which was controlled by Barloworld.
The three Japanese still had an advantage of 1'25 to the leader's group (now reduced to about 30 riders) when they started the circuit Cycle Sports Center circuit. But the break of Japanese was caught by the leader's group at four laps to go. Wismilak and Capec wanted to attack over and over again, but Cardenas always rode in front of the group, and didn't allow it. Finally, the green leader jersey attacked himself at the final lap, and he finished first, celebrating with his teammate Matteo Carrara, who was second place.
Cardenas already took the mountain's jersey yesterday, and he also got the points jersey today. So he is wearing all the jerseys now and it was the first time in his six year career. "I came to Japan to win stages and GC, it wasn't important for me to take the mountains jersey or another one. But after I started the race, I'm in very good condition and so I could get everything."

Today's fifth stage of the Tour of Japan was to be the toughest of the tour. Normally held around the Shuzenji keirin centre, this year it started there then went out on to a tourist road along mountain ridge before returning to the keirin centre. This included several long climbs, and when added to the tough course at Shuzenji, it made for a difficult day, especially coming after the mountain time trial of yesterday.
The attacks came early and eventually a group of four went clear of the bunch, controlled by Barloworld. They did a great job of containing the break, then bringing it back. Many riders lost contact with the main group leaving about 20 to fight out the win, which was taken in fine style by the tour leader, Cardenas. The AIS Mapei Aqua Australian boys did a great job with Simon Clarke 4th and Chris Sutton, 9th. Simon moves to 16th overall with a flat stage in Tokyo to go.
