9th Tour of Japan - 2.2Japan, May 15-22, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - May 20: Mount Fuji ITT, 11.4kmMizourov wins mountain time trialBy Miwako Sasaki in Mount Fuji Kazakh Champion Andrey Mizourov (Capec) became the first winner on Mount Fuji in the Tour of Japan. The ex-Telekom rider finished the 11.4 km ascent in a time of 40 minutes and 27 seconds. But the race leader Felix Rafael Cardenas (Barloworld) finished only 27 seconds second and kept his green jersey. The time trial of Mount Fuji was very hard. The race started from 800m altitude and finished at 2000m. The altitude gap was 1200m and the average gradient was over 10.5 percent. And at 1 km to go, the slope steepened to a leg breaking 22 percent. The weather was cloudy and it was only 4 degrees at the finish. 85 riders started the race, separated into three waves, and the race had an hour and a half break between each group. Mizurov raced in the second group and he already took the top time before the third and final 25 rider group started the race. But no-one of the final 25 riders could beat the Kazakh. Team Barloworld was always watching Mizourov from the start of Tour of Japan because of his experience in Telekom (2000 and 2001) and Mercatone Uno (2002). He joined Team Capec from this year, after he was in French team Oktos and finished in 9th place in the Route du Sud last year. Now Mizourov is second place in GC, 1'10 behind Cardenas. And tomorrow's mountain stage will be the final battle of Team Barloworld vs Team Capec. Australian team reportBy Brian Stephens, Australian U23 manager Today's stage to the Tour of Japan was an 11.4km time trial up the slopes of Mt Fuji, Japan's famous and spiritual mountain. The race started at an altitude of 800m with the finish at 2,000m with ramps of over 20%. The AIS Mapei Aqua Australian riders survived this tough stage, all finishing in the top 50.
