9th Tour of Japan - 2.2Japan, May 15-22, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 16: Todaiji Temple - Nunome Dam Circuit, Nara, 146.2kmAustralian Typhoon in JapanBy Miwako Sasaki in Nara Australian David McKenzie (Wismilak) became the new leader of the 9th Tour of Japan after winning the second stage in Nara, taking over from Mathew Goss (Australian National Team). 92 riders started from Todaiji Temple, which features a huge statue of Buddha, created in the 8th century. The weather was fine, but a little chilly. The race was fast from the start and had a very high speed, even though it was neutral from Todaiji to the Nunome Dam Circuit (18.6km) due to security reasons. Nobody was allowed to attack from the peloton, but some riders were already dropped in the neutral zone. On the third lap of 12, six riders attacked from the peloton. The break contained Koji Fukushima (Bridgestone), Assan Bazayev (Capec), Felix Rafael Cardenas and David Plaza (Barloworld), John Lee Augustyn (Konica-Minolta) and McKenzie. Soon Paolo Longo Borghini (Barloworld), Takumi Beppu and Taiji Nishitani (Aisan) chased the break and joined them at seven laps, and the nine riders managed to gain almost 2 minutes to the peloton, which was controlled by the Australian National Team. Augustyn dropped off the break at nine laps and went back to the peloton, which was now reduced due to an acceleration in pace. But in the end, it couldn't catch the break. Barloworld tried to win the race on the last climb, but McKenzie followed them and won the final sprint. Second was Cardenas ahead of Bazayev, at one second. "We worked hard together at the last lap," said 30 year-old McKenzie. "Barloworld had three riders there, and one of them sacrificed himself, too much attacking. It was good for me, because the finish turned out exactly as I wanted." It was the biggest victory for his Indonesian Team Wismilak, the only professional continental team in Asia. McKenzie will get a big bonus from his manager as a result. Australian Team reportBy Brian Stephens, Australian U23 Team Manager Today's stage 2 of the Tour of Japan was a change for the AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team, but an Australian was still the winner and leader of the tour. This time, David McKenzie put himself in an eight-man break which stayed clear until the finish, where he out-sprinted his companions. The AIS team tried to bring the break back in the middle stages but it wouldn't happen on the tough 10km Nara circuit, which had to be tackled 12 times, on top of a 25 km ride to the circuit. The front group, which included three riders from Barloworld, rode at a strong pace and defied anyone running them down. Note: Mathew Rex was a DNF (did not finish) because he was judged too being close to being lapped by the front group on the last lap, and lapped riders have to stop. He was not eventually caught and finished but the time penalty for being lapped was the same as the time he lost, and he still continues the race.
