Fassa Bortolo repeat; Navigators impress

The well-drilled Fassa Bortolo squad repeated their win of twelve months ago in this afternoon’s team time trial at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi-Bartali in Italy. Riding with the kind of speed they'd normally use to set Milan-San Remo winner Alessandro Petacchi up for a sprint victory, the team covered the flat, technical twelve kilometre course in a time of 13 minutes and 44 seconds. Six seconds back were the Liquigas-Bianchi team of Stefano Garzelli, with the Navigators Insurance squad upstaging the more established ProTour teams in the race by taking third.
The New York-based team finished 17 seconds behind Fassa Bortolo and 11 down on Liquigas-Bianchi, pushing Davitamon-Lotto and QuickStep down into fourth and fifth place respectively. Miche finished a surprising sixth, while the Ceramica Panaria – Navigare team of race leader Guillermo Ruben Bongiorno was 26 seconds down in ninth.
Fassa Bortolo’s lung-busting effort moved seven of its riders to the top of the leaderboard, this morning’s second-place finisher Francesco Chicchi taking over the blue jersey of race leader. Marco Velo is now four seconds down in second, while Bongiorno drops to 36th overall.
Navigators boss Ed Beamon was understandably delighted after the stage. ‘We were pretty motivated after doing a solid ride in the Tour of the Mediterranean last month. (They were eleventh). We had been talking about this stage since training camp. With O’Neill, Baldwin and O’Loughlin all being good time trialists – especially over a short distance – and the other guys also being strong, we were aiming for top five. It was an ambitious goal but we went into it one hundred percent. To do better than that is great.’
The Settimana Internazionale Coppi-Bartalia continues tomorrow with the longest stage, a 206.9 kilometre leg from Riccione to Faenza.
