46th Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic - NEUSA, June 30-July 3, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - July 1: Aubuchon Circuit Race, 78/34 milesHaedo squeezes break for winJacques-Maynes holds overall leadBy Mark Zalewski Both Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home and Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada (yes, it is a mouthful) continued their control over the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic in Massachusetts with Juan Jose Haedo (Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home) winning the stage and Ben Jacques-Maynes (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada) keeping his lead through the second of four stages. Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada played the role of team leader watching and waiting for dangerous breaks. Eventually a three rider break containing Haedo and Mike Dietrich (Fiordifrutta) rolled away and grew a lead of more than a minute that held for much of the race and into the last lap. However, the screws were tightened by the chasing pack led by the Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada team and Haedo was just in sight. "Juan Jose was in the early three-man break," said Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home director Frank McCormack. "It got up to about 1:55 and held steady around 1:30. They were close to getting caught on the last lap." But the two remaining break riders held on long enough with Haedo taking the sprint ahead of Russ Langley (Snow Valley p/b Seal-on) and teammate Jonathan Page. Today's circuit race of just more than three miles per lap might seem like more of a criterium - especially when the race officials run the race under criterium rules - but McCormack assures that the small climb that is raced twenty-five times will take the spring out of any riders legs. Even more important is the fact that it leads up to the finish line. Ben Jacques-Maynes was happy with his team's performance today saying, "Our tactics were perfect today and everything played out just like we'd planned but since we had seven strong guys riding on the front, that should come as no surprise." The fact that Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home and Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada are the only teams to have the maximum of eight riders racing contributes to their dominance. However, Frank McCormack is not counting out the other teams. "Sierra Nevada and us both have eight guys but there are a couple of veterans on the Targetraining squad who can ride well." Tomorrow's stage is the toughest, with an 11.4 mile circuit featuring a finishing climb to the summit of Wachusett Mountain. "The grade grows steeper and steeper the closer you get to the finish," said McCormack. "It doesn't seem like much at the start, but it gets pretty tough and the [circuit] course leads uphill to the finish climb too. Quark owns stage - Colavita/Cooking Light keeps GC leadTina Pic (Quark) described today's race as "rather mellow," with only a few attempts at a break that race leader Susan Palmer-Komar (Colavita/Cooking Light) needed to cover. But the laws of cycling physics say that the easier the race is early the harder it will be later. Knowing this, the veteran racer remembered that the final sprint is a difficult one and changed her tactics. "I sprinted from the base of the climb because other times I had been boxed in." And the tactics worked, with Pic taking the sprint ahead of a hard-charging Nicole Freedman (Ford-Basis). "Quark led it out the whole last lap," said Pic. "Someone broke before, but Quark just led it out beautifully." Quark also controlled the QOM points as well taking the stage win, with Sarah Uhl owning the point lead. With the stage win, Pic jumps over Dotsie Cowden (Colavita/Cooking Light) for second place, now nineteen seconds behind Palmer-Komar.
