Fat tyre specialist Decker succeeds on road

Yet another mountain biker has proven successful this year at trying out the road scene. This time it is Carl Decker who usually races for Giant Pearl Izumi in the dirt scene, who joined forces with Broadmark Capital road team to take out the Elite National Championships in Deer Valley, Utah. His response to the win was, "maybe I should look into this road racing."

Decker has been racing mountain bikes and cross since 1984, but it is only in the last year that he decided to try his hand on the road. "I'm getting sick of going to the same races and racing against the same guys all the time. It's cool to race all these guys I've never seen. I'm new to all the tactics, so I've got a lot to learn, but…"

The men's 198km race saw an early break of 13 riders go up the road taking over four minutes on the field. After a long day out there, they were caught at the base of the final climb out of the canyons into Park City. A few counter moves eventuated, but nothing stuck and it was all together coming back into Deer Valley mountain resort.

"I went to the front and did a few mountain biking attacks which were pretty useless. Everyone can just sit your wheel," explained Decker. His attacks were followed by a solo attack that got a good gap on the field in the final kilometer. Ben Raby chased to bridge the gap and Decker caught his wheel. When Raby caught the solo rider, Decker went around and managed to open up a gap on the final uphill drag to the finish. Decker took the win and Raby managed to hold on for second place, with Decker's teammate Andrew Fischer taking the bunch sprint for third place.

"I didn't think I would win this, but I knew I could," said Decker. "There was no real dominant team. My team was strong and I figured it could be one of us. I was just happy to be feeling reasonable. I haven't been feeling that great lately. I've been sleeping in an altitude tent and I've been thinking that it might not be working well for me, but today I felt great. Nothing hurt. My main challenge was that I have trouble peeing on the bike. I had to stop and hope that I could chase back on. That was one of my strategic wins today," he joked.

Decker flies out tomorrow straight to Mont St Anne for the mountain bike World Cup race.
