International Tour de Toona - NEUSA, July 25-31, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 7 - July 31: Downtown CriteriumHealth Net-Maxxis cleans up in ToonaMoninger takes overall and KOM, Henderson wins sprintsBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Altoona, PA Even though other teams and other riders have worn the various leader's jerseys and won other stages of the 2005 International Tour de Toona, the team holding all the cards at the end was Health-Net Maxxis, lead by veteran pro Scott Moninger in yellow. "We were all about the overall win on GC," said USPRO champion Chis Wherry of Health Net-Maxxis. "The team focused on that win and second to that was the stage win - we just wanted to control the race." Control they did, keeping Moninger out of trouble and sprinter Greg Henderson rested for the sprint laps and finish - all the while setting a pace that shelled a third of the field. With only one point separating Henderson from sprint leader Brad Huff (Mercy Cycling), it was just a matter of time before the Health Net-Maxxis train rolled through the bonus with Henderson taking maximum points. After locking up the green jersey, and ensuring no breaks would get away, the green machine turned to a stage win. With all riders on the front, driving the pace, the set-up was perfect for Henderson, who delivered as usual. "We won it the hard way, doing our share of the work," said Henderson. "I wanted to be in third around the chicane, because the finish straight is longer than you think, especially with the headwind." Trading the work with Health Net-Maxxis was Colavita-Sutter Home, trying to win the frequent time bonus laps for leader Mark McCormack. "We wanted to move Mark up into second," said Jonathan Page. "We did enough of the time bonuses to make sure." After that work was done it was back to normal racing for the two teams, both going for one more stage win. "We finished the race with me and Mark leading J.J. out, but Henderson is really fast." "When I went to kick I ran-out the back of Page's wheel I was going so hard," said Henderson about the final sprint. "Scott and I were totally saved the whole race, but then it was the yellow jersey leading me out!" Putting up a good fight for the sprint jersey was Brad Huff (Mercy Cycling), scoring one point on the first bonus lap. "It was really hard, but I had a little help for the first sprint - after that it was just impossible!" Health Net-Maxxis capped off their domination of this year's race by also winning the team classification, ahead of Colavita-Sutter Home. A surprising third place was Fiordifrutta, followed by Aerospace Engineering and Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada. Jeanson and Thorburn fight for seconds to earn firstJeanson wins overall with bonuses - Pic wins stageThree seconds was all that separated race leader Christine Thorburn (Webcor) from second place Genevieve Jeanson (The Bicycle Store) on the overall coming into the final stage of the International Tour de Toona. And with a plethora of time bonuses on offer - every five laps in fact - the likelihood for lead changes was high. But after all the mathematic time computations were done, it was Jeanson who made the right calculations, winning by just one second over Thorburn. "You can never have too many seconds," Jeanson said after the race. "Webcor had Erinne [Willock] up there but I knew she would be tired from the the week. I planned on being all over Christine Thorburn today." "It would have been great to let a break get off right away," Thorburn said. "But we did get the team GC win, it's the first time we have done that!" Jeanson wasted no time in letting Thorburn know she planned on winning from the beginning, taking the first time sprint just five laps into the race. With a gain of three seconds, the two became co-leaders on the road and anything was possible. She then put another three seconds on Thorburn five laps later, putting the ball in the Webcor court. For the mid-race sprint, it was all T-Mobile's Ina Teutenberg, attempting to lock-up her green jersey. But after that it was back to Jeanson and Thorburn, with the Canadian champion picking up another second after leading out from the final corner. For the final sprint Thorburn decided to jump Jeanson early and lead from the final corner, but something was different. Coming out of the turn, Thorburn went wide with Jeanson sitting outside. With no room left, Jeanson had no choice but to ditch into the hay bales. "I was trying to take that corner first like she had the other times," Thorburn explained. "She was following me and I went wide. I had been skipping my wheel through there every time and it happened again." With Jeanson and much of the field caught behind, Thorburn was left to take the time bonus of four seconds, putting her just one second down on Jeanson. This set the stage for an action-packed final sprint with a final ten and seven seconds on the line. Coming around the final turn, it was U.S. criterium champion Tina Pic (Quark) followed by Ina Teutenberg (T-Mobile). Half-way down the finish straight Teutenberg hit a pot-hole and dropped her chain, which sent her to the ground. Only Pic and teammate Laura Van Gilder were ahead of the crash and took the win, along with the time bonuses. "I was second through the chicane and had Ina on my wheel and I thought it was going!" explained Pic. "I didn't see the crash." Regardless, Teutenberg had already clinched her green jersey and had only suffered minor injuries. Following in the field were Jeanson and Thorburn, seperated by one second respectively. The International Tour de Toona is the final Prestige Cycling Series event before the Bermuda Grand Prix in September. The top ten teams in the series standings following today will receive housing and $2,000 in travel support to attend the race.
