Health Net-Maxxis reigns over queen stage
Moninger climbs into race lead with stage win

Even though Scott Moninger (Health Net-Maxxis) has the most wins of any active American racer, he still keeps his achievements modest when it comes to the team. "I was sitting in third on the GC so I was just the back up plan," Moninger told Cyclingnews after soloing to victory in the International Tour de Toona's queen stage.
"We were going to have Justin [England] go solo up Blue Knob and nobody reacted, so I went with him." The two teammates left everyone behind on the climb up to the Blue Knob Ski Resort with Moninger so strong, he even left England over the summit.
With the field shattered on this first KOM, it was Health Net-Maxxis that took advantage. Moninger and England swept down the long descent as the rest of the field reassembled behind. After a short flat section, the road kicked-up for a few meters and John Lieswyn (Health Net-Maxxis) jumped out of the field to bridge.
Soon it was three teammates on the front, and only Colavita-Sutter Home's Mark McCormack did anything about it. "Only our team was chasing, and when Lieswyn went I said, 'Aw great! If he gets up the road we will never see them again!''"

"I didn't even see Mark come across," said Lieswyn. "With Mark there we couldn't race full-tilt -- that changed the race." The race progressed towards the second KOM, a tough dirt and gravel second category climb.
On that climb, Moninger again jumped away from the field, even with rear wheels slipping. Again on the descent the four lead riders came together with one more KOM climb up Sugar Run. It was here that Moninger made his strongest move. "I attacked about one and a half miles from the top of the KOM," explained Moninger. "They were out of sight and I just kept going."
With little more than ten miles to the finish and a fast, steep descent ahead of him, Moninger hoped his gap was big enough to last. "I felt confident going over but was not sure on the descent -- but I managed," said Moninger. Out of the infamous single lane tunnel, Moninger emerged with a double digit gap and kept driving.
Behind him, teammate Justin England covered Mark McCormack, who was now trying for second place. Unfortunately, a SUV on the bottom of a hill was not moved quick enough by the police and England slid-out under it. Thankfully, England suffered only minor injuries and did finish, but McCormack rode the rest of the way alone. Up the road, Moninger took the victory with plenty of time.

Even though Hugh Moran (Aerospace Engineering) rode a strong race, staying in the second group on the road all day and taking plenty of KOM points, he ended up tied with Moninger.
The judges broke the tie based on number of first and second category climb points, and Moninger had the upper hand. "The KOM jersey was our goal, so I'm a little disappointed," said Moran. The previous bearer of the polka dot jersey Glen Mitchell (Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada) did not have the legs today after a tough week of racing.

The French national riders have been a popular part of the women's race in this year's Tour de Toona. However, they have been a little quiet on the road -- until today. After racing almost seventy miles and over one of three QOM climbs, Marina Juantre (MS2R) made her move, and made it last the the twenty-plus miles to the finish. "I wanted to win today, it was the last day I could win," Juantre said following the race. "I didn't feel very good. On the first climb I managed to stay within thirty seconds of the leaders."
On the second climb, up the tough dirt road, Juantre attacked and the remaining field did not respond. The French rider gained time quickly on the descent and eventually became the race leader on the road before the last QOM. "Every climb it would break up and then come back together," Genevieve Jeanson explained to Cyclingnews. "Nobody wanted to work so I set the pace."
With the overall lead in jeopardy, Webcor finally sprang into action behind Jeanson, lead by climber Erinne Willock. Juantre held a maximum of around five minutes on the road, but with Willock on the front that lead dropped over the final climb. "Erinne just stayed on the front," explained race leader Christine Thorburn. "Then with five kilometers to go Rachel [Heal] attacked, which was perfect." That final burst of speed, brought the gap down to little more than two minutes, keeping the yellow jersey with Thorburn, but not coming close to catching Juantre.

When asked by race promoter Rick Geist if she had ever won more than a thousand Euros in a race before, Juantre replied, "No, this is the first time I have ever won this much!"
Even with the tough climbing in today's stage, QOM leader Lyne Bessette (Bianchi/GP/PCW) retained her lead, winning the jersey. Sprinter Ina Teutenberg (T-Mobile) also kept her lead in the sprint series, though was exhausted after having to mark many moves on the day's tough climbs.
The biggest shake-up comes behind Thorburn in the overall, with Genvieve Jeanson (The Bicycle Store) only three seconds behind. Annette Beutler (Quark) and Kimberly Baldwin (T-Mobile) sit at eleven seconds. With big time bonuses on the line in tomorrow's final criterium, it is still anyone's race.
