Girls race out of respect

After Stage One was cancelled due to the tragic death of Amy Gillett on Monday and Stage Two was neutralized in memory of Amy and out of respect for her five AIS teammates who are recovering from the crash in hospital in Jena, Stage Three became the first official stage of this years Thuringen Rundfahrt. However "despite it being called a race," said Nürnberger Director Petra Rossner, "it was not really a race."
Many of the girls have decided not to race, including the Vlaanderen team who arrived at the scene of the accident only moments after it happened on Monday and the 60 girls who started the race are riding simply out of respect for the AIS team. "I told my girls it was their choice as to whether they race or not," said Rossner, "Olivia [Gollan] decided not to. For the rest of our team, our only motivation is to win some flowers to take to the girls in hospital." Oenone [Wood] visited the girls in hospital yesterday and asked them their wishes. Their response was that she should race and bring them flowers every day.
The 119km stage that traveled from Greiz to Gera, whilst normally fast and furious on a normal year was not really that much faster than yesterday's neutral stage according to the girls. Despite rain and dreadful weather, there would be no complaints about the weather today. The race finished in a bunch sprint with German Angela Brodtka (Van Bemmelen-AA Drink) taking the win from Regina Schleicher (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung) and Priska Doppmann (Univega Pro Cycling Team).
All team directors have agreed that the race prize money of 15,000 Euro will
be given to Warren McDonald and the AIS to be used as they need. According to
the Australians, the support from the local community has been amazing, with
everyone 
pitching
in to make things as comfortable as possible for the families and friends of
the Australian team.
Tomorrow's stage starts in Gera and travels 124km to Schmölln.
