Stage 3 - July 10 : First National Bank Maritime Bay Classic, Manitowoc, WI, 100/60km

Pate Scores Win In Manitowoc

Danny Pate (Jelly Belly/Pool Gel) sprinted to a win at the Holy Family Memorial 100 criterium in Manitowoc tonight. Pate was part of a group of 12 riders who lapped the field with 10 miles remaining in the race and won the bunch sprint to the line. Karl Menzies (Advantage Benefits/Endeavour), winner of last night's race in Menasha, nearly pulled off the win by attacking the field with 2 miles remaining but was caught on the last lap and went on to finish 11th.

David McCook (Jelly Belly/Pool Gel) led out his teammate Pate for the win and finished 12th to retain the yellow jersey as overall series leader with a narrow five-point lead over Menzies. Frank Pipp (Advantage Benefits/Endeavour) bridged to the early breakaway and picked up more points in the Midwest Airlines Sprint Competition to retain the red jersey. The Advantage Benefits/Endeavour team now holds the top three positions in the sprint standings.

The race, the final event of today's First National Bank Maritime Bay Classic, took place in ideal conditions on a warm evening in Manitowoc. The race course, at 0.7 miles in length and with wide streets, typically produces a fast race and tonight was no exception. Tonight's race also followed an early pattern in this year's International Cycling Classic as the decisive breakaway formed early within the first five miles of the race when nine riders pulled away from the pack. Included in the break were three riders from Advantage Benefits/Endeavour: Menzies, Garrett Peltonen, and Nick Reistad. Victor Ayala (Kahala LaGrange) eventually dropped off the back of the group as the riders gained time on the field with Advantage Benefits/Endeavour covering all chase attempts behind.

Although the remaining eight riders in the break had the back of the main field in sight on several occasions, they were never able to lap the field until a group of four chasers caught them with 20 miles remaining. Frank Pipp was one of the four chasing riders, giving Advantage Benefits/Endeavour four riders in the break and sufficient horsepower to finally catch the field. Menzies made his daring bid for victory with three laps remaining, but the McGuire/Langdale and Jelly Belly/Pool Gel teams worked hard to pull him back during the last lap to set up the sprint with Pate winning over Erik Saunders (McGuire/Langdale).

In the women's event, Magen Long (OBRU/The Bicycle Store) who was runner-up last night in Menasha to Catherine Powers (TDS Schwalbe) turned the tables and beat Powers in the final sprint. The two riders are now tied atop the overall standings with Long wearing the yellow jersey based on a tiebreaker. Long's teammate Kelly Benjamin (The Bicycle Store) holds a commanding lead in the Midwest Airlines Sprint Competition.
