International Cycling Classic - Superweek - NEUSA, July 8 -24, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 18 - July 24: Bodyworks by Concours Whitefish Bay Classic, Whitefish Bay, WI, 100kmFourth time the charm for CandelarioAdvantage Benefits/Endeavour claims final sprint and overall classificationsby Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Milwaukee Superweek has been rather bittersweet for Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly-Pool Gel). While three of his teammates have won a race of this year's series, he has finished second... three times! The third time came on Saturday night at the Great Downer Avenue race when Candelario made a seven rider break but was isolated against two Advantage Benefits/Endeavour riders. Today in Whitefish Bay, Candelario again made the break -- and like Sheyboygan and Kenosha, the Jelly Belly-Pool Gel team used their speed and power to deliver Candelario to the line for his first Superweek win for this year. "We're pretty hard to beat with Pate and Dave [McCook] burning it down the back stretch," said Candelario. When asked how relieved he was to finally break into the top of the podium, he replied, "The difference between winning and losing is so small. Actually I felt better yesterday than today!" Series leader Karl Menzies (Advantage Benefits/Endeavour) also made the break and wound up his sprint just behind Candelario finishing second and clinching his overall win."We had some strong guys up the road," said Menzies. "Alex had a fast lead-out so you know he's got a good chance of winning." But before Menzies could focus on getting a race win, he and his team had to work for sprinter Frank Pipp, who was just one point behind Emile Abraham (Monex). "We wanted to win the sprint jersey first and then after that let everyone have free reign getting up the road," said Menzies. For the first sprint, Advantage Benefits/Endeavour rode hard on the front with Menzies marshaling the troops until he delivered Pipp to the line. "I had the strongest team today," said Pipp. "We had the whole team on the front for the first one, and Karl actually sat-up on the line to give me the points and to put another point between me and Emile. That told Emile that the jersey is yours to win or lose now." From there the breaks went and Advantage Benefits/Endeavour was ecstatic to see them go -- with the remaining sprint points up the road for the rest of the race. "How can I not feel great, we got all of it as a team," said Pipp. Finishing third today and finishing Superweek well is Erik Saunders (McGuire/Langdale) who initiated and drove many breaks during the series and winning one race. He, along with many other riders, use Superweek as training for the upcoming menu of criteriums in August, leading up to the USPRO Championship. "I came here flat and started out struggling for the first races," admitted Saunders. "Then I steadily got better and finally got the legs." He along with many of the pros here will target the Bank of America criterium in Charlotte, North Carolina in a few weeks time.
