Steels wins as FDJ and Davitamon take control
Belgian sprinter Tom Steels (Davitamon-Lotto) has won the second stage of the Etoile de Bessèges, beating Jaan Kirsipuu (Crédit Agricole) and Jean-Patrick Nazon (AG2r Prévoyance) in a bunch finish at the end of the day's 149km journey from Nîmes to Saint-Ambroix. With strong support from his Française des Jeux, Freddy Bichot retained the overall lead.
After Bichon, Maxim Montfort and Arnaud Labbe nabbed a five minute advantage on the first day, it was obvious the frustrated peloton would try and get its revenge today, and the attacks were early and numerous. But FDJ worked to control the damage, knowing that eventually the sprinters' teams would pitch in.
"There were a lot of attacks," said Bichot's directeur sportif Franck Pineau, "but we tried to limit the gap to three minutes so that, sooner or later, we would get some help from the sprinters' teams."
And so Nazon's AG2r Prévoyance squad moved to the front to chase down a six-rider break that got away mid-stage, then had to redouble their efforts to limit the first big attack of the year by Cofidis's Sylvain Chavanel.
"Charles Guilbert (Bretagne-Jean Floc'h) and Olivier Bonnaire (Bouygues Telecom) went with him three laps from the finish," said Pineau. "They soon had a 1.10 advantage and all Freddy Bichot's team-mates put themselves on the rivet to bring them back. When the gap was down to 45 seconds, Tom Steels' team came to help us and Sylvain Chavanel was caught 2km from the finish."
