35th Etoile de Bessèges - 2.1

Bichot has good legs

Freddy Bichot (La Française des Jeux) has won the first stage of the Etoile de Bessèges, which finished in Marseille. After 126 km, he was too strong for Maxime Monfort (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago), with Arnaud Labbe (Auber 93) finishing third, another 30 seconds back. The main peloton, led by Jens Voigt, came in five minutes down.
The three man breakaway was formed after only 15 km, when Bichot, Monfort and Labbe chased down an attack by Christophe Agnolutto (Agritubel) and rode clear on the montée de Belle Fille. The trio reached a maximum lead of nine minutes at the foot of the col de l'Espigoulier, and the peloton had no chance of reaching them. A counter attack by Eddy Seigneur (RAGT), Laszlo Bodrogi (Credit Agricole) and Alessandro Maserati (LPR) failed, as did a subsequent one by Samuel Dumoulin (Ag2r), and the three leaders still had seven minutes by the time they reached Marseille for the last 15 km.
Labbe cracked on the Gineste, leaving Bichot and Monfort to fight it out for the stage honours. Bichot was far superior in the sprint for the young Belgian, and took the stage and the first leader's jersey together.
