Brindabella Challenge - NECanberra, ACT, Australia, December 2-4, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Day 1 - December 3: Road Races, 50/70 kmMorton's moment; Glennan too goodBy Anthony Tan at Old Parliament House, Canberra After yesterday's wash-out that put the criteriums back to tomorrow morning, Saturday's road races were held in intermittent sunshine, and consisted of a 50 kilometre handicap and 70 kilometre scratch race. Riders that had raced the Canberra Tour (formerly known as 'The Milk Race'), one of Australia's largest domestic club events, went over familiar territory today. Beginning at Old Parliament House, riders headed in a westerly direction out to Cotter via the Coppins and Uriarra Crossings, negotiating U-turns or smaller loops along the way before heading back to the start/finish. First up was the handicap event, the 120-strong field split between six groups from G grade (referred to as the 'limit' group) - starting at 4.35pm - to A grade (also known as the 'scratch' bunch), who left last, a massive 23 minutes later at two minutes to five. On hand to wish the groups good luck were two famous Canberrans: three-time world time trial champion Michael Rogers, back in his home town after a team bonding and photo session with his new ProTour team, T-Mobile; and double World Cup champion Oenone Wood. "Have fun first and foremost, and watch out for the wind," advised Rogers. "And don't get caught!" he quipped to the back-markers. Temperatures in Australia's capital city are often a few degrees less than the coastal climes of Sydney, and the Canberra of today was no different: a biting, cold wind saw most start off with arm warmers, and knee warmers were also in abundance. In the end, the generous head-start awarded to the back-markers proved too much for the scratchies, and it was C grade rider Bradley Morton (Canberra CC) who attacked and won easily from club-mate Chris Loynes and Simon Hickey (Peloton Sports), collecting a cool 700 smackers for efforts. Fastest time was taken by scratch group rider John Forrest, with Vicki Eustice the best of the ladies, both from Canberra Cycle Club. Most of the heavy hitters waited for the all-in men's scratch race that kicked off at twenty to six; pre-race favourites and well represented was the newly-launched FRF Couriers-Caravello squad, a formidable force with seven elite riders on the start list. Blustery conditions, dead roads and an up and down parcours made for 'honest racing', remarked Cyclingnews' Chief Editor Jeff Jones, who earned himself the third fastest time in the previous handicap event. By the race's midway point, the front group consisted of just five riders after beginning with 50. The race proved an easy win for Troy Glennan (MG XPower p/b BigPond), the current Australian club time trial champion attacking his breakaway group seven kilometres from the finish and using raw power to motor towards the line. Completing the podium was Peter McDonald and Joe McDonnell, both from FRF Couriers-Caravello. "Just after we came off the loop, a few of the other boys attacked, and I went on the opposite side to where the others [attacks] had just gone, so I think I caught them by surprise," a smiling Glennan told Cyclingnews. "After getting in the early break, I knew there was a few climbs I had to get over. There was a few strong climbers in that group and the last part was going to be a tailwind, so I knew if I could get over the climbs, I'd be in with a shot. I was feeling quite good, so I stayed in there with them and it all worked." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Anthony Tan/Cyclingnews
