Green Mountain Stage Race - NEVermont, USA, September 3-6, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 3 - September 6: Voler Burlington Criterium, 31/19.8 milesMilkowski & Dionne take final stageOverall titles to Moore and McCormackOfficial report Anna Milkowski (Rona) and Charles Dionne (Webcor Builders) closed out the 2004 Green Mountain Stage race with wins in their respective criteriums in downtown Burlington. Under pristine early-fall conditions racers tackled the demanding six-corner, one-kilometer course through the center of Vermont's largest city. By virtue of their respective second place finishes in Burlington, Amy Moore (Quark Cycling) and Mark McCormack (Colavita Olive Oil) collected the overall race wins. After three days of struggling to survive on the race's incessant climbs, Milkowski threw caution to the wind in the closing laps of the women's 30 km race. The first-year pro attacked alone with three laps to go, not all sure how her legs would respond. Forgetting for a few moments that she trailed in behind the leaders during all the important stages, Milkowski gained a good gap over the small chase group and held onto it to the finish. "I wanted to do something in this race," said the 29-year-old from Maine. "I've been doing some racing and getting steadily better, but I've really been suffering. It's required a sense of humor." Dionne outsprinted McCormack on the final straightaway, a fitting end to the eight-man breakaway he and the Colavita had started 45 laps earlier. Sprinting for points on lap five, Dionne and McCormack decided to see how far they could take their newly formed gap. Within three lapss they were joined by Aaron Olson (Colavita Olive Oil) and Scott Zwizanski (Ofofo-Lombardi Sports), making the break even more dangerous. Several laps later Andrew Randell (JetFuel) soloed up to the quartet, and Russ Langley (Snow Valley), Mark Pozniak (Team Ontario), and Peter Hult (Fiordifrutta) made it eight a couple laps after that. With every major team except Louis Garneau represented the break looked good to go, and go they did. After hovering around the 10-second mark, the margin rocketed up to 20 seconds with less than 10 laps to go. Olson led out McCormack in the final downhill corner, but Dionne proved too fast for the defending GMSR champion, taking the win from McCormack by several bike lengths. General classification at GMSR is calculated by points rather than time, somewhat evening the playing field for GC contention between climbers and sprinters. "Although it's not a national race, it's still high quality with very, very challenging courses," said McCormack, who won Saturday's epic Mad River Road Race.
