44th Vuelta al Pais Vasco - 2.HCSpain, April 5-9, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - April 7: Zalla - Vitoria, 169 kmConfirmation for neo-pro ZarateVictory in Vitoria with Kelme in commandBy Chris Henry Victory was never a certainty, and in the end the advantage was a mere 21 seconds, but all that mattered for young neo-professional Carlos Zarate (Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme) was crossing the finish line first in the third stage of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. Zarate displayed the arc of emotion and physical determination as he set off on a 35km solo effort, exuding confidence, showing weakness, then rallying to hold off the charging peloton behind. Zarate's teammate Alejandro Valverde won another convincing sprint, this time for second place, and took over the race lead once more. "It's really incredible to win," Zarate said, still shocked after the podium ceremony. "I was shocked that I could come up to Jens Voigt... and it's strange to get such a big victory on my own. I was away for a long time, and I wasn't sure I could stay out front for so long." Zarate dedicated the win to his grandfather, and also to Kelme boss Vicente Belda, who gave him his first chance in the professional ranks. "It's a dream come true to win at home in the Basque Country," he said. Unlike the previous stage, Wednesday's stage 3 was a far less animated affair, perhaps due to the difficulties which lie ahead in stage 4. The stage profile nonetheless offered an opening Cat. 1 climb of the Alto de Orduña, followed by the Cat. 2 Alto de Salinas de Añana and two ascents of the Alto de Zaldiaran, a gentle but stubborn rise whose summit came just 10km before the finish. The stage was perfect for an opportunist attack but unlikely to provoke any great changes in the general classification. Critérium International winner Jens Voigt (Team CSC) was back in action and eager to make a selection, perhaps paving the way for Ivan Basso down the road. Voigt figured in a break in the early part of the race, a move which went clear after 26 kilometres and prompted little reaction from a peloton more concerned with staying warm and riding defensively. Voigt eventually helped pull clear just two riders with another attack as he powered his big frame over the Alto de Salinas de Añana with Constantino Zaballa (Saunier Duval) and another neo-pro, Michele Scotto (Lampre) in tow. These three established a gap on the main field, but Voigt was eager to press on and soon dropped his companions and set off on his own solo venture. Distanced initially, Zarate wasn't to be deterred by Voigt's power and the young Spaniard began to claw his way back to the German, with Zaballa in a similar position further back. With 40km to race Voigt had 37" over Zarate but the Kelme rider was closing in. Zaballa languished another minute and a half behind while the peloton was at over five minutes. Voigt took more mountain points over the first climb up the Alto de Zaldiaran, but on the heavy, lumpy roads between climbs he found his power fading as Zarate charged to the front. As Zarate caught Voigt 32km from Vitoria, he briefly rode at the front but soon looked to the experienced CSC rider to pull through. Voigt shook his head no and clung to Zarate's wheel, hoping for a bit of respite before picking up the pace once more. Overcome with youthful enthusiasm, Zarate decided to leave his partner behind, attacking Voigt and moving clear without difficulty. Dropping Voigt may have provided a boost to Zarate's confidence, but the young first-year pro would soon enough find his own legs growing heavy on the approach to the final climb of the Zaldiaran. Facing a stiff wind, long false flats and the occasional rise before the categorised climb, Zarate's pace dropped noticeable as he began to labour, rocking his upper body in a search for power. He was gaining time on Voigt and Zaballa, but the peloton was now beginning its steady chase, led mostly by yellow jersey Danilo Di Luca's Saeco team. As Zarate hit the lower slopes of the Zaldiaran, the main field was pulling back time in huge chunks. In the space of one kilometre Zarate saw his lead drop 20 seconds, and even as he appeared to have a second wind on the climb, the peloton continued to churn toward the finish, putting his solo escape in serious doubt. The Zaldiaran summit sat just 10km from the finish, but Zarate would still need time in hand as the descent was gradual enough, and ridden on wide roads, to allow a fast moving bunch to rapidly pull back more time. Australian Michael Rogers had taken over the pace-setting in the peloton, along with Quick.Step-Davitamon teammate Patrik Sinkewitz, and it was the big power of Rogers that brought the main field back into contention. Crossing the top with 1'45, Zarate began his final pursuit to the finish, constantly looking over his shoulder nervously, seemingly expecting that his own capture was imminent. With 7km to go his lead was 1'33, by the 5km mark it was down to 1'05, but at this point he was back in control and in with a chance at his first-ever professional victory. As Zarate neared the finish, Voigt's teammate Bobby Julich, sitting within striking distance of the leader's jersey, launched a strong attack from the head of the field. Julich rode well and built a small gap, but he was too an important a rider for the field to let fly, and he was soon back in the fold, setting up a bunch sprint for second place. Zarate crossed the line alone in disbelief, raising his hands and shaking his head, while the field roared in just 21 seconds later. Valverde repeated his blistering sprint from stage 1, handily taking second place and regaining the race lead even if he still sits on equal time with 19 other riders. The heaviest day of climbing awaits the peloton on Thursday, 182km between Vitoria and Lekunberri. With a final summit just 3km before the finish, the queen stage of this year's tour could once more create substantial splits in the top-heavy general classification, before the often decisive final time trial on Friday afternoon.
