Stage 2 - April 6: Bergara - Zalla, 180 km
Zberg takes sprint, Di Luca leads overall

After nine categorised climbs and 180 leg-breaking kilometres, the second stage of the Itzulia came down to a reduced bunch who attacked each other successively throughout the final ten kilometres. In the end it was decided in a tight, somewhat surreal mini bunch sprint in which Swiss veteran Beat Zberg (Gerolsteiner) came out on top. Zberg was followed by Euskaltel's Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi), once again close but unable to win, and Colombian Mauricio Ardila (Chocolade Jacques).
Today's stage commenced with its longest climb (Cat. 2 Krutzeta), relatively close toward the start and followed later in the day by a series of laps over successive Cat 3 climbs near the finish in Zalla. In Bergara at the start it was raining and the drizzle continued off and on for much of the route. After heading south the race met the Krutzeta, a 7 kilometre ascent averaging about 6% and with switchbacks closer to 12%. None of the early attempts to get away succeeded but as the climb started Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner), Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Daniel Atienza (Cofidis) and Juan Mercado (Quick Step-Davitamon) managed to create a gap and crossed the summit 15 seconds ahead of the peloton. From here the race started to track west, down past Marino Lejaretta's farmhouse at Oleta, passing behind the mythical mountains of Anboto and Urkiola, through the town of Otxandio and down the long Dima pass to Iban Mayo's home town of Igorre.
By the bottom of the descent toward Dima, all the escapees had been swept up save for Unai Etxebarria, who had now been joined by Jérôme Pineau (La Boulangère). By Igorre and toward the next encounter, the Gorbea range and the Cat. 2 Bikoitzgane (4.5 kms long at 9.22% average), the pair had drawn out its advantage to a minute. At the summit 11 kilometres later that gap had swollen to six and a half minutes. Neither was a real threat to the general classification, although soon enough Pineau would be the virtual race leader as Etxebarria's presence took the pressure off the Euskaltel team before the roller coaster loops that made up the final 80 kilometres.
The first sprint of the day was at Llodio (77kms) and at this point the gap was steady at 6 minutes but over the next 20 minutes as they climbed the Garate (Cat. 3 3kms long, average 4.38%) the two had increased their lead by another 3 minutes. Pineau was now well and truly the virtual leader having left Bergara 1'40 seconds behind Valverde. Etxebarria had ceded much more time in the final parts of the first stage after his work had been done. Pineau's advantage finally prompted Kelme to take the initiative and they commenced to work at the front of the bunch reducing the difference to 5'34 soon after the Cat. 3 Humaran. The race was now onto the successive loops of the Cat.3 Beci and Avellaneda climbs.

In the early parts of the first loop Pineau wasn't really collaborating as well as he could have been and Etxebarria attempted to escape a few times, to no avail. With Kelme doing all the work behind in the bunch the gap was rapidly being reduced and stood at about three minutes as the leading pair commenced the first ascent of the Beci. Etxebarria was doing all of the work to stay away, until near the top the Frenchman tried without luck to leave him. As the climb progressed for the peloton it didn't appear that anyone was now in control. A few gaps were made and brought back until Luis Perez (Cofidis) and Alberto Martinez (Relax-Bodysol) managed a small advantage. At the first cresting they were 1'52 behind Etxabarria and Pineau with the peloton following 19 seconds further back.
Little by little Perez and Martinez made there way closer to Etxaberria and Pineau. At the 131 km mark and the meta volante in Zalla, the chasers were 31 seconds back with the bunch at 1'27. Caught in between were Piccoli (Lampre) and Patxi Gutiérrez (Cafes Bacque). As the leading pair approached the slopes of the Cat. 3 Avellaneda, Martinez and Perez joined them. At the top, with 44 kms left to race, Pineau crossed first and the gap was 1'50. Martinez was now the leader on the road.
The route then turned quickly back to the Beci for the second crossing and Piccoli & Patxi Gutiérrez were finally brought home by the peloton now pulled along by U.S. Postal. As they headed onto the narrow wooded slopes the attacks came thick and fast. Ahead Pineau was dropped nearing the top. As they passed over the 'Samuel Superman' graffiti, Etxebarria, Perez and Martinez continued, and at the summit they had 24" on Pineau, 1'10 on Jonathon Gonzalez (Costa Almeria-Paternina), with a Saeco and Phonak coloured peloton close behind.
With 40kms to go the peloton was at 1'30. Behind on the descent seven riders, Igor Astarloa, Iker Flores, Iván Gutiérrez, Jonathan González, Ferrio, Cunego and Perreiro joined up with Pineau.The peloton was not very organised behind and allowed a gap to open. Liberty Seguros and US Postal tried to take charge but by the last meta volante and with 23 kms to go the Etxaberria group was 22" ahead of the chasers.
As it came to the early ramps of the second visit to the Avellaneda, the chasing octet was about to merge with the Etxaberria group. Perez and Martinez were looking back, sitting up as they were about to be caught. Then Unai Etxaberria launched a big turn which drew everyone's attention. Almost simultaneously, or better, just as everyone's eyes turned forward, Iker Flores went down the other side of the road. Unai was brought back but Iker was away. Behind Liberty Seguros was now running down the newly formed group of 10 which seemed to have lost a bit of momentum in the Euskaltel double take.
At the top of the climb as they passed the castle it was all back together, Iker's cheeky but valiant little gesture neutralised. Saeco imposed its numbers across the front on the road that was only about five bikes wide and then as they appeared to have it all under control Valverde came out of nowhere and drove it up the 7% ramps. Rebellin followed, then Mercado, as Saeco tried to bridge and bring it all back again.
Mayo was hovering, dancing on the pedals seeing who was doing what, and where. Valverde continued trying in vain to break the leaders, but behind the peloton was shattered. Then it was the turn of Cunego, then Mercado, then Serrano, they were joined and left for dead by el txintxeta, the Basque thumbtack, David Etxaberria. The trio had managed to make a dent in the peloton and Etxaberria a dint in them, but quickly joining and then passing the lot of them through the switchback towards the summit was Mayo. He was followed by Koldo Gil, the duo in turn chased by small group, comprising Menchov, Di Luca, Sanchez, Landis and Aitor Osa amongst others. This group in turn had dropped the Valverde group. The rest of the race was well out the back as Mayo was caught, and Sanchez went over the top first and down into what is becoming frequent of late the flying Sammy Sanchez mode. He was chased by Osa and Serrano and anyone else mad enough to try and emulate him.

By the 5km mark it was again together and then apart as Mayo with the ever present and 2002 winner Osa on his wheel. It just wouldn't stop. Some Kelmes had got back and then Vinokourov had a tussle. Quick.Step launched a big turn out and down the right hand side. This didn't stop as they hit Herrero and the uncategorised climb with 3kms to go. Short sharp and sweet over the top was Sanchez again. But again he was brought back with everyone, or the ones that were left, watching each other. One more little rise to go and then came another prick from the thumbtack, David Etxaberria and he was off with a gap.
Etxebarria was grabbed by the manic chasers at the 1km banner, as some 40 odd riders headed into Zalla for a tight sprint. Sylvain Chavanel opened the sprint before Zberg took it wide with Sanchez following. Zberg took it by a half bike from the luckless Sanchez, while Di Luca's effort in the sprint gave him the overall, pipping Valverde who still managed to remain attached to the group during the mania of the final few kilometres but not far enough to the front to earn himself any bonus. The big losers of the day, Evans, Simoni, Perez and Astarloa all losing more than a minute at least.
