Bike Wise International Junior Tour - NEWanganui, New Zealand, September 26-28, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - September 27: Wanganui - Hunterville - Wanganui, 120 kmAustralian Docker takes controlBy Alan Messenger Australian team member Mitchell Docker won the longest stage of the Bikewise New Zealand International Junior tour at Wanganui today and took the tour leader’s yellow jersey. The sixteen year old from the Brunswick Club in Melbourne was in a four-man break that went away on a hill climb after seventy kilometres. The three Kiwis in the break, Mat Haydock (Auckland), Edward Crossling (Masterton) and the overnight Tour Leader Luke McCarthy (Paihiatua) allowed the Aussie a soft ride for some forty kilometres and paid the price at the stage finish.Haydock finished second, Crossling third and McCarthy fourth. Over the final fifteen kilometers, the Victorian time trial champion was well in control: "After the last big hill I noticed the others were feeling it in the legs. I just rolled through for my turns and I knew I was feeling good for the sprint," said Docker. Docker said that the team plan had been simply to have a rider in any breaks and to cover the first three riders on general classification. The team didn’t have it all their own way though; Australian junior road champion Michael Teggelove didn’t have a good prologue on Friday and today he was dropped on the biggest hill after only 25 kilometres. Docker also had to drop back after 38 kilometres to assist team-mate Steven Evans who had crashed. Docker now leads the tour with a six second lead over Crossling, with Haydock at eight seconds and McCarthy at sixteen seconds. The tour finishes on Sunday with two stages, a 56k circuit race close to the city and a tough 60k road stage.
