New Zealand National Championships - CNNapier, New Zealand, October 23-26, 2003Day 3 - October 25: Road races: Vet 2-3 Men; Elite, Vet 1 & 2 WomenTrack experience pays off in Women's road raceBy Alan Messenger Track racing experience paid off for Joanne Kiesanowski when she won a seven rider sprint to take the Elite Women's Title at the New Zealand Road Nationals at Napier today. Susie Wood had been the strongest on the hills but she had to be content with second placing ahead of two Wanganui riders Catherine Sell and Brei Gudsell. Ros Reekie May, with a season of International racing behind her was the most experienced rider in the field but she could only manage sixth place. Time Trial Champion Dale Tye finished at the front of the second bunch some five minutes back from the leaders. In the Vet 3's race, tough Southlander John Alibaster was too strong for Malcolm Pearce and one of New Zealand's cycling "greats", Jack Swart. Swart was sporting a abrasions and bruises, a legacy of a crash in last week's Tauranga Open. In the Women's Vet 1 category race, Sally Fraser outsprinted regular rival Marguerite Ritchie to take the title.
