Day 4 - October 26: Road races: Under 17, Under 23 & Senior Men

Blackgrove wins New Zealand road title

By Alan Messenger

Heath Blackgrove, better known as a track rider, survived a blistering day to win the New Zealand National Road Championship at Napier today, beating US-based Pro Glen Mitchell and Robin Reid. Over the final two laps of the Taradale circuit the field disintegrated and with less than two kilometres to go Blackgrove rode away from the other two survivors to take the title.

A bunch of four chased the leaders home with Geoff Burndred taking fourth place from Mark MacKay, Matt Yates and Fraser McMaster. Gordon McCauley, aiming for his fourth National Road Title didn't have a good day and finished eighth.

The Under 23 riders started with the Elite field and the medal winners finished just behind the top eight. Former World Junior Champion Jeremy Yates outsprinted Peter Latham to take the gold with a short gap back to Tim Gudsell in third place.
