Stage 5 of the Giro d'Italia Elite/Under 23 was flat for around 85km before going over three solid climbs and finishing just out of Bologna.

The usual break got clear after another very fast start with the first hour's average speed nearly 52kph. The break was caught on the second last climb and the main group fought it out over these climbs. The tour leader was dropped as a group of six rode off the front with the win going to Dainius Kairelis from the Cyber team.
