Stage 5 - June 13: Lienz - St. Kanzian am Klopeinersee, 200 km
Longest stage to Carrara
Matteo Carrara (De Nardi) has won the longest stage of the Tour of Austria, covering the 200 km between Lienz and St. Kanzian am Klopeinersee in 4 hours, 44 minutes and 19 seconds. Carrara beat home Czech Petr Herman (Hervis Copyright) and Belgian Davy Commeyne (Palmans) in a bunch sprint. Race leader Gerrit Glomser (Saeco) finished in the same time, and kept his number one position on the GC.
The stage began with a Cat. 2 climb after 25 km, but the peloton stayed together over this with Formaggi Pinzolo controlling the pace for mountains leader Rinaldo Nocentini. Following this, the stage began to get very aggressive, with numerous small groups of riders trying but failing to get clear. Eventually after 111 km of racing, four riders were able to get a gap: Hayden Roulston (Cofidis), Luis Laverde Jimenez (Formaggi), Bostjan Mervar (Perutnina Ptuj), and Laurens Ten Dam (Rabobank). The quartet presented no threat to race leader Glomser, and were allowed to get 3'20 in front after 156 km, with Saeco controlling the tempo.
On the second and final climb of Abtei (km 163), Ivailo Gabrovski (3rd on GC) had problems following the field, and abandoned. The high temperatures (33 degrees) caused him to become very dehydrated, and he was placed on a drip. At the top of the climb, the four leaders were only 20" in front of the field, however they were allowed to go out to a minute again as the peloton regrouped.
On the run into Klopeinersee, the break was caught, with Luis Laverde the last to fall with 5 km to go. The sprint was quite technical, and it was Matteo Carrara who had the best skills to stay in front, followed by Herman and Commeyne.
