Cascade Classic - NEBend, Oregon, USA, July 9-13, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 6 - July 13: Carrera Motors | VW Old Mill District Criterium, 60/40 min & 5 lapsBessette wins four. Candelario wins men's crit.By Kristy Scrymgeour Lyne Bessette (Saturn) and Alex Candelario (Prime Alliance) won their respective races at today's final stage of the Cascade Cycling Classic. Bessette's win upped her tally to four wins out of a possible five stages giving her a convincing win in the overall tour, whilst in the men's race it was Tom Danielson (Saturn) who held onto the top spot to win the tour. This year's criterium was a little different to previous years with a couple of extra corners to add to the excitement. The L-shaped course was fast with a small rise near the finish with the men racing 60 minutes plus 5 laps and the women 40 minutes plus five laps. In the women's event Heather Albert and her Team Basis team were aggressive from the start showing that were not going to give up without a fight. Cyclingnews spoke with Bessette after the race who was impressed with Albert's style of racing. "She was very strong and she never gave up the chase. Even when we were both out there on our own on the long stage, she just kept chasing me all day." Albert's attempts to break away in the criterium however did not eventuate and it was in fact Bessette who attacked just as the field was getting tired and soloed to the finish once again to take her fourth stage and the tour overall. Winning the bunch kick to take second place was Nicole Freedman (Team Basis) followed by Magen Long (OB12U). Taking second place in the General Classification was Albert followed at a distance by young T-Mobile rider Kristin Johnson. Bessette was in a very good mood after the race and invited the whole women's peloton for Ben and Jerry's ice-cream - her treat. "I felt great this week. After our National Championships I had a very easy week and this was a good tour to come back for. The courses were always hard and it gave me a chance to test myself, especially on the long day. It is unusual for me to attack early and ride alone and I wanted to see if I could keep my rhythm for a long distance and still be able to ride strongly on the climb at the end. Now I head home for a while before The International in Altoona." In the men's criterium the race was also aggressive from the start with a break of about seven riders developing a convincing gap to the field. Out of that break Tim Johnson (Saturn) and Antonio Cruz (US Postal/Berry Floor) attacked and were eventually caught only to be countered by Chris Horner (Saturn) and Alex Candelario. The pair worked together and by the finish line had a gap of 14" to the field. Candelario won the sprint over Horner to take the race, and Johnson came in third having attacked out of the peloton in the latter stages of the race. In the overall General Classification Danielson was up by 49" from Jonathan Vaughters (Prime Alliance) and Chris Wherry (Navigators) after the final race and takes another tour win for 2003.
