Espoir & Junior Road Race Championships - NEUSA, July 3-6, 2003Day 1 - July 3: Espoirs & Under 17 road raceErdelyi & Grabowski take titlesBy Kristy Scrymgeour Jonathon Erdeyli (Ofoto Lombardi Sports) was crowned US Espoir National Champion today when he outsprinted six others at the end of a tough 199km race. On the rolling course in Texas, a small group of seven riders escaped the field and managed to hold a gap of 2’52” until the finish. In the group with Erderly were Darby Thomas (US National Espoir Team), US Elite National Champion Michael Voigt (Team Snow Valley), John Hygelund (Sierra Nevada-Clif Bar), Oliver Stiler-Cote (Fiordifrutta/Wheelworks), Stuart Gillespie (Harvard University Cycling), and Saul Raisin (Ofoto-Lombardi Sports). Erdeyli, a dangerous sprinter, having many years of track racing in his legs, came to the Nationals with the intention on improving upon last year’s second place finish. He now has a day to recover before the Time Trial on Saturday. In the Junior 17-18 category it was Zak Grabowski of the Hot Tubes Cycling Team who held off second and third place finishers Keith Norris (Aerospace Engineering Group) and Chad Beyer (Giant/Domenics) by 13 seconds in the 149km race over the same course as the Espoir men. This completes his hat trick of Junior National Champion titles, as he won a National Criterium title and a time trial title in 2001.
