Pan American Games - JRSanto Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 10-17, 2003Main Page Results Previous Race Next Race Day 3 - August 12: TrackLopez sets new pan-Am recordIn the only medal event of the day's track races at the Pan American Games, young Cuban rider Ahmed Lopez set a new pan-American record in the men's 1000m time trial with a time of one minute four seconds. Christian Stahl of the USA was second and Bolivia's Benjamin Martinez took the bronze. US team report Christian Stahl (Bethany, Conn.) presented the US track team its first medal in track competitionat the Pan Am velodrome in Santo Domingo. Stahl clinched the silver medal in the men's kilo under clear skies with warm and breezy conditions. Stahl rode in the tenth position out of twelve riders slated for the men's 1km time trial. Stahl clocked a 1.06.751, good enough to hold first place if only for a few minutes. Ahmed Lopez (CUB) rode immediately after Stahl and bested his time by just over two seconds to take the gold and set a new Pan American kilo record of 1.04.423. Arroy Martinez (Bol) finished third in a time of 1.06.862. Despite a rough track, the Olympic Training Center resident-athlete made sure he put his best effort on the line. "I was fighting it the whole last half-lap," said Stahl after the official awards ceremony. "The track, it felt horrible, but I just concentrated on not falling over the whole time. I felt good when I was done and I was guaranteed a medal. I was hurting, but I was just trying to hold control. I knew if I competed like I did all year I was bound to get a medal. That's what I've been training for the whole year and it was actually one medal better than I expected so I've exceed my goal and I'm very happy." Earlier in the evening session, men's keirin first round rides took place as Giddeon Massie (Colorado Springs) qualified for the men's final with a victory in the repechage round. "I'm not happy with it - I made some mistakes," said Massie. "I wish I could say that everything went right and I felt great, but you know how racing is sometimes, you don't always feel your best so I go into it knowing I made the final and hopefully tomorrow will bring a better day." Earlier in the morning session Massie and teammate Stephen Alfred (Santa Cruz, Calif.) both qualified for the men's sprint. Massie posted a 10.831 to list at fifth position while Alfred clocked a 10.861 to claim the sixth position. Tanya Lindenmuth and Chris Witty also qualified for the women's sprint with solid runs in the flying 200m today. Lindenmuth posted a 11.701 to claim the 2nd spot with Witty right on her heels with a 11.789 for the third position. Nancy Contreras (Mex) took the top qualifying spot. Lindenmuth liked her ride today and is looking forward to the finals. "It went just as I expected," commented Lindenmuth. "I did a perfect run yesterday and went 11.7, so I knew what I could do today. I almost got a 11.6 out of it. I did everything right, so I'm happy." Equally happy was coach Des Dickie: " I am pleased with the women as they qualified second and third, but I am disappointed with the men," explained Dickie. "I thought we prepared well and I know we have better speed - we have shown that in training. The men qualified fifth and sixth so they are in the game and we have to start preparing for the sprints from here. "I don't think we are out of the hunt, I still think we have a really good chance to be on the podium with both sprinters and we're looking forward to that. It's exciting. We know where we are and what we have to do, so we just go out and do it," Dickie said. Track action continues Wednesday with the first round of the men's sprint and keirin finals.
