Green Mountain Stage Race - NEVermont, USA, August 29-September 1, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - August 31: Sugarbush Resort/Mad River Road Race, 64.5 milesMcCormack, Jeanson go 3 for 3 in VermontDifferent day, same results. Although Mark McCormack (North Easton, MA; Saturn) had to really work for it, he and Genevieve Jeanson (Lachine, PQ; Rona/Esker) made it 3 wins in 3 days on Stage 2 of the Mad River Valley Green Mountain Stage Race, the Sugarbush Chamber Mad River Road Race. The men saw lots of multi-rider breakaway attempts, but none succeeded as the GC leaders kept everything real tight in the pack. As the riders approached the first of the 2 final climbs up to Appalachian Gap, Tim Johnson (Knowlton, PQ; Saturn) started to drive the field and formed 2 break groups in hopes of stretching out the field for McCormack to take advantage of. But when the field caught the 2nd break in the beginning of the final climb, it was anybody’s game to win. McCormack placed himself well in front, but Mark Walters (Milford, PA; Navigators) put him in some serious difficulty as the 18% climb up the final 1k began. But in a remarkable effort, the gapped McCormack charged back up the hill and was able to nip Walters at the line for one of the closest finishes in the history of the race. Johnson was rewarded for his efforts by taking the final podium spot over Ciaran Power (Denville, NJ; Navigators) and Michael Dietrich (Andover, MA; Fiordifrutta/Wheelworks). Kevin Bouchard-Hall (Shelburne; Hawley/ATA) led the Vermont contingent with a very respectable 9th place finish. McCormack continues to lead in GC with a 26 point lead over Johnson. It will be a dogfight tomorrow for the last podium spot on GC, as 2 points separate Cameron Hughes (Yorktown Heights, NY; Lemond Fitness/Cra-Z Soap) and Mark Walters (Milford, PA; Navigators). The women’s race saw the accustomed Rona dominance as they completely dictated the race from start to finish. Shortly after leaving the neutral zone, Shani Block (Rona/Esker) went off the front, and was joined a bit later by Jeanson and Amy Moore (Team Ontario). Jeanson didn't stay around for long though, as she dropped the other break riders shortly after winning the points sprint in Granville. With Jeanson long gone, Block had had enough of Moore and went clear of her, and got some help later on as Johanna Buick (New Zealand; Rona/Esker) bridged up from the group, passed Moore, and caught up to her teammate. Jeanson won by 5+ minutes with Block and Buick finishing 2nd and 3rd. Rona made it a sweep of the top 4 spots when Katheryn Curi led the charge of the peloton up the Appalachian Gap over Sara Bresnick (Somerville, MA; Dansko/Wheelworks). Jeanson has a seemingly comfortable 64 point lead over Block, with Buick and Kuri tied for 3rd going into tomorrow’s final stage. If the GC places hold after tomorrow, it will be the 2nd year in a row that Rona has swept the first 4 GC spots at the GMSR. Tomorrow wraps up the 3rd edition of the GMSR with the Voler Burlington Criterium, a 1 kilometer 6-corner loop through the streets of downtown Burlington, VT.
