Green Mountain Stage Race - NEVermont, USA, August 29-September 1, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 3 - September 1: Burlington Criterium, 31/ 19.8 milesMcCormack and Jeanson complete the sweepBy Alan Atwood Mark McCormack (Saturn) and Genevieve Jeanson (Rona/Esker) made history Monday as they won today's Voler Burlington Criterium, their fourth consecutive stage, to win the 2003 Mad River Valley Green Mountain Stage Race. The criterium stage does not offer any rest to the riders, as the unique general classification points format requires racers to maintain their aggressiveness throughout this final stage. And this was shown no better by McCormack, who countered a brief early attack with Mark Walters (Navigators) and went clear to stay. McCormack and Walters rode a very smart race, working well together and maintaining a half a lap lead throughout the 2nd half of the race. Walters started the day in 4th place overall on GC, so his effort was a good one, putting pressure on Cameron Hughes (Lemond Fitness/Cra-Z Soap) and his slim 2 point advantage for the final podium spot. The Lemond boys tried their best, but lots of little attacks from the hard-charging field stifled any attempts to get Hughes up to the break or to bring the break back entirely. At the finish, McCormack attacked Walters out of the last corner and took the stage to win all 4 days, the first time it's happened in the men's race. The field wound up for the massive 15-wide field sprint that Burlington is famous for, with Ciaran Power (Navigators) benefiting from his teammate Justin Spinelli's leadout to take it and 3rd in the stage. McCormack won the overall general classification, and Mark Walters' efforts on the day vaulted him over Hughes and Tim Johnson (Saturn) into second overall. Johnson was third, Hughes fourth, and Power fifth. The women's race was not what anyone had expected, as last year Jeanson lapped the field twice on her way to the stage win. But this year she was content on sitting in and letting her teammates set a blistering pace, which knocked out a third of the field in the first 10 laps of the race. After the dust settled, Katheryn Curi went to the front and was the workhorse for the rest of the race, setting the table to Jeanson to snag all but one of the points sprints and eventually setting her up for the final dash to the line. Jeanson won the final sprint, with Curi able to hold her position and take 2nd, and Amy Moore (Team Ontario) taking 3rd on the day. Jeanson won her second consecutive GMSR, and team Rona took the first four podium spots for the second year in a row as well, placing Katheryn Curi, Shani Block, and Kristen Lasasso in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Sara Bresnick (Dansko/Wheelworks) took 5th overall. In the amateur races, the overall general classification winners were Josh Dillon (Louis Garneau) in the Category 3 Men, Kevin Molloy (CRCA/Sakonnet) in the Masters 30, John McKone (CCB/Volkswagen) in the Masters 40, David Rath (GMBC/Invensys) in the Masters 50, Joelle Numainville (Espoirs Laval) in the Category 4 Women, Tyler Holtzmann (Team Ontario) in the Juniors, Cameron Colpitts in the Category 4/5 Men u32, and Stuart Abramson (Portland Velo Club) in the Category 4/5 Men 32+.
