These range in quality from Lance Armstrong's very detailed personal website to basic sites knocked up by neo-pros; what they all have in common is an insight into what the rider thinks of themselves that's sometimes missing from the regular media. The following list is all the sites we've been able to find to date if you know of others, please let us know. Cool fact: Frankie's advice on shaving your legs is, "the main thing is to not cut yourself and bleed to death in the tub." Lance ArmstrongBig, glossy site full of stuff about the Lancer and not surprisingly, the most popular personal pro site. Cool fact: Armstrong turned pro as a triathlete at the startlingly tender age of 16. Unofficial but extremely enthusiastic fan site. Kurt Asle Arvesenwww.syklingensverden.com/dagbok/arvesen/hoved.htm Neat and simple site in Norweigan of the former U23 World Road champion. Quoted by many Norweigan cycling fans to be "the biggest disappointment in Norweigan cycling" after winning the Worlds in 1997; Arvesen will certainly be aiming high in 2002 with Team Fakta in an effort to realise his full potential. Firstly, the photo on the home page could leave one suspecting they had inadvertently happened across an "'adult actor's" page. The Flanders - Prefetex rider (Div II) keeps the boring cycling stuff to a minimum and spends more space detailing various travels he has undertaken - this guy is a bit of a character. Travel tip: Ronny reccomends you bring a change of underwear if venturing onto Costa Rican roads! Daniel AtienzaSwiss born, former Saeco rider now with Cofidis but carries a Spanish passport. This is a neat site, in French, with all the basics well attended to. Michael BarryA fantastic site from the Canadian ex-Saturn rider-turned-Postie. Includes a very comprehensive race diary, Michael's race schedule, a great bio and photo gallery - it even includes the race diary of his other half, Dede Demet, a United States National Cycling Team member. Our favourite is a section titled "In The Kitchen", a recipe list of recipes from Michael and Dede's favourite home-cooked foods. Robert BartkoOfficial site dedicated to the dual Olympic gold medallist from Sydney 2000 (4000m team and individual pursuit). Newly signed since with team Telekom, the neo-pro faces the transition to the professional peleton in 2001. Fairly basic site with bio, regularly updated diary and a few pics thrown in. Michele BartoliBartolis's official Anglo/Italian site was launched early 2001, and now has some early problems ironed out - it has flash and HTML versions running side by side. The site is extremely professionally built with all sort of multimedia tricks, as well as his impressive palmarès and fan club. Cool feature: You can order a customised audio greeting from Michele for just 5 Euros! All proceeds to a worthy cause though, the Lance Armstrong Foundation. This unofficial site is focussed on Italian star Michele Bartoli, his recovery from his disastrous June 1999 crash and subsequent knee surgery, and his return to racing at the top level. Cool fact: Bartoli's physiotherapist Lievens Maesschalk also treated Johan Museeuw's knee problem. Christophe Bassonsperso.wanadoo.fr/bassons.fan-club/ This French fansite details the career of the most famously self-declared clean rider in the peloton. Best know for his staunch anti-doping stance, run-in with Lance Armstrong in the 1999 Tour and subsequent early departure from the race. Ironically he was in the Festina squad in 1998-99.. and was probably the only rider to escape with reputation unscathed. Antonella BelluttiItalian-language site of the 1996 Olympic track medallist. Loads of pics. Ben BerdenOfficial site of the professional road and cyclo-cross rider from Belgium who rides for Vlaanderen/T-interim. Simple yet neat, and in Flemish. Stephane BergesExtremely colourful official site of the AG2R - Decathlon rider. Somewhat chaotic in its presentation but everything you could possibly hope to know is here.. in French. Rubens Bertogliati from Lampre-DaikinA very snappy site, as long as you have a psychedelic bent. It would also be very handy to have a few language skills up your sleeve as well. Frederic BessyUnofficial fansite, but with a very organised committee! The site details the structure including treasurer and president. Fredo is a starter for Credit Agricole in the 2001 Tour. Seems a little out of date - in French. Paolo BettiniIl grillo (the cricket) has recently revamped his official website and it's looking good. One drawback: it says that it's available in Italian and English, but the English version doesn't work yet. Bummer. So your enjoyment from Bettini's site will depend on your ability to read Italian. As well as a regular diary, Paolo's site has a nice selection of photos, Bettini trivia, palmarès and a fan club section. Some cool facts: his home town is called La California (a small village in Tuscany), he loves his moto-scooter and has a resting heart rate of 32 BPM. Jeroen BlijlevensNicely presented official tribute to this consistent Dutch sprinter, now riding with Lotto - Adecco. Blijlevens has won stages in each of the Grand Tours and the overall win in the 1994 Tour de l'Avenir - in Dutch. Chris Boardmanwww.chrisboardman.com or www.lunt.demon.co.uk/boardman.htm This is a fan site, despite the name, though in these days of Internet trademark litigation you have to wonder how long that can continue. It's a huge, graphics-heavy single page, so making a cuppa while it loads is wise, but there's plenty of information here about Boardman's careers from his early days with Manchester Wheelers to his crowning Hour Record and retirement. Michael BoogerdThis is Boogie's official fan site. There's plenty of information - both current and historical - to keep you informed and amused, including his bio, palmarès, photos and downloads. You can even buy an official Michael Boogerd fan club T-shirt. So long as you're a Boogie fan and can read Dutch, you'll love this site. Only in Dutch, features bio, palmarès and interviews with Boogerd, along with up to date news. Extensive fan site, slightly marred by Java gimmickry. Tom BoonenSimple, tidy site of the Belgian revelation from Balen, who surprised all (maybe including himself) with a podium position at the 2002 Paris Roubaix. Includes a bio, regular diary, palmarès, photos and a guestbook. Wade BootesA great website for the 2000 ABA (American Bicycle Association) and Dual Slalom World Champion. Australian born Bootes began his cycling career in BMX aged 7 and continues both MTB and BMX disciplines more than 20 years son. Bootes' journal is a great laugh - aided by some very whacky photos of some very bored bike riders. Cool fact: Bootes is an Aussie who arrived in the US in 1993 with $2,000 to his name. He did the BMX circuit in a clapped-out van that needed a quart of oil for every tank of gas. Florent BrardFrench language site on the young Frenchman, pro since 1999 and currently with the Festina squad. Florent shows plenty of promise, with a close second in the 2001 Tour de l'Avenir and a 5th in the 2001 Tour de France prologue (100th overall). Kevin BrodyBrody is a significant US trials personality as a sponsored rider and Eastern Fat Tyre Association trials coordinator. Cool fact: Also flies planes. Yvonne BrunenYvonne has been 4 times Dutch champion (3 times on the road, 1 time MTB) and won, amongst others, several stages in the Tour Feminin. Cyclingnews.com is also listed as a favourite website, which is a very good thing. The site is fine, in Dutch, and covers most of the areas a fan wants to know. Angel CaseroIn Spanish, this is a pretty comprehensive site, that gives another look at Casero's life Dylan CaseyAs for all of the Posties who have sites, Casey's is polished, professional and up-to-date. Mirko CelestinoOfficial site of the 1999 Tour of Lombardy winner. Contains a solid summary of the Saeco rider's career highlights, with up to date news and a few pics. Marco ChristenThe website of a promising young rider from Switzerland, currently riding for German squad Team Scheidegger-Giant. Contains a palmarès, photos and guestbook. Only in German. Danny ChewA former pro road racer, Chew now competes in the even tougher (some would say mad) world of ultramarathon road racing. He won Race Across America in 1996 and 1999, was second last year and aims to ride a million miles before he dies. He's about halfway there. Mario Cipollini'Super Mario' finally has his very own website. Early teething problems appear to have been sorted out, although it needs Flash. The very professional looking site features the Lion King's palmarès (154 victories to date), race calendar and some interesting photos - we like the one with Cipo (Superman) and Wonderwoman! Andrea ClavadetscherEven if you don't understand the language, the pictures on this site capture the sheer unrelenting slog of the Race Across America. Marion ClignetOfficial site of the former French track World Champion - in French only. A little skinny on her career information, but focuses primarily on her involvement in the promotion of women's sport. Baden CookeThe official site of the relevatory sprinter from Victoria, who has proven that determination, speed and class will eventually get you a ride on a Division 1 pro team no matter what the circumstances. "Cookie's" one of the new breed of sprinters that will follow in the footsteps of legendary sprinters like Cipollini and Zabel, and is already causing fear in the peloton during his short career at FDJeux.com. Looks like some guys at FDJ public relations have put this site together for him, because it's all in French - even though he's most definitely Australian. Nicole CookeThe prodigiously talented rider from South Wales and multiple world champion certainly has her act together at an early age. A superbly designed and presented website that pays homage to a girl who just can't seem to stop winning - a great problem to have in life! Cool fact: Nicole was triple Junior World Champion in 2001 - on the road, time trial and MTB. Scary rider! Fausto Coppimembers.aol.com/CoppiRider/faustocoppi/ This indefatigable Italian rider captured the imagination of postwar Italy in a way that indelibly branded cycle racing into the national psyche. His legendary rivalry with Gino Bartali polarised the tifosi and his Giro/Tour double in 1949 and 1952 was not equaled by an Italian until Marco Pantani's triumphant 1998 season. Cool feature: Try going into the site through a google search and translating. Apparently 'Coppi' is Italian for 'Goblets' so Goblets becomes the hero of the story - quite amusing! CycleveRemarkable personal site assembled by a 13 year old Quebecois junior. English version in progress, apparently. Tom DanielsonSuperb site of the new climbing sensation who smashed Tyler Hamilton's record in the Mt Washington hillclimb. Danielson is set to ride for the Saturn Cycling Team in 2003, with ambitions of racing in Europe. The site is excellent, with a great bio, weekly news updates, photos, race schedule and comments from his partner, Kristen Johnson, also a champion cyclist. Click here for an interview with Tom Danielson. Cool fact: Both Danielson and his partner Kristen Johnson are 2002 Collegiate MTB National Champions. A powerful couple. Carlos Da CruzFan site for the Festina rider, created by 17 year old Sylvia. Lots of photos, palmarès and race reports, and bang up to date. In French. Julian DeanOfficial site of the experienced pro roadie from New Zealand, who recently gave his country its best-ever result at the 2002 World Road Championships in Zolder, finishing in 10th place behind an unbeatable Mario Cipollini. Plenty of stuff, including a bio, features, news, race (and holiday) diary, photo gallery and forum. Pedro DelagdoOne of the more detailed sites we have com across, featuring the 1988 Tour winners career on a year by year basis from 1982 until 1994. Contains a good photo library, pre 1982 bio, curiosities and palmarès. Cool fact: Delgado's peak yearly mileage was 31,000 km in 1992, 4,500 more than in his Tour triumph year of 1988. Cool fact: Tapes of Di Luca's victories helped bring a young Italian out of a motorcycle crash-induced coma in early 2000. Cadel EvansCadel has just launched his new website in light of the ex-MTB now pro roadie for the world's largest road squad, Mapei-Quick Step. With its retro styling that reflects Cadel's laidback personality and non-traditional cycling background, it would be fair to say that you can take Cadel out of mountain biking, but you can't take the mountain biker out of Cadel. The usual bits and pieces one would expect, but don't expect to be blown away with anything truly special (only Cyclingnews does that!). Cool Fact: Fignon's career will probably (unfortunately for him) be best remembered for his soul destroying loss on the streets of Paris in 1989, as the aero-bar equipped Lemond pipped him by the smallest ever Tour wining margin - 8 seconds. Nicole FreedmanNicole's snazzy, newly launched official website features the 2000 US Road Champ's palmarès, interviews and some great photography. The home page currently features a shot of Nicole's spectacular win at Redlands, CA over a prematurely celebrating - and crashing, Ina Teutenberg! Thomas FrischknechtThe site of the 1996 world MTB champion and dead-set legend. Probably the largest mountain racer's site, with lots of pics and a few nice touches of humour. A bit out of date, though. Cool Fact. Frischy could have been a damn sight nastier than this: "Jerome's confession he made and the way he passed over the title shows that Jerome Chiotti has a good character and style. In German only. Igor and Alvaro Gonzalez de GaldeanoThe official site of the Spanish brothers riding for ONCE, Igor and Alvaro Gonzalez de Galdeano. Very detailed and user-friendly, but a bit of a prob if you can't read Spanish. However, if you're really keen, throw it into the Google's translation service - and Bob's your uncle. Ivan GottiVery much a work in progress, with next to none of the links actually functional. One that does work is the link to his fan club and, naturally, the sponsor links! Another site with an impressive looking home page and very little else. Tyler HamiltonBy far the best feature on Tyler's site is his diary, which is especially revealing during the grand tours. The next few years will be equally interesting, as the once Postal domestique turned co-leader at CSC-Tiscali aims to reach the same heights of glory as his compatriot Lance Amrstrong. Cool fact: Hamilton's dog is a golden retriever called Tugboat. Julie HansonSaturn team member Julie Hanson's site will focus on juggling racing and motherhood, but is currently a bit light on content. The recipe for pumpkin soup sounds good though. Mathew HaymanA web page devoted to Australian Rabobank pro, Mathew Hayman. The site will focus on up to date information directly from Mathew. The page will keep abreast of events with race to race progress of Mathew as he rides in the classics and stage races in Europe. Mathew's diary, photos, an email newsletter and more are featured. Hannes HempelThus Spake...Hannes Hempel! This young Gerolsteiner rider's official website opens with the theme composed by Richard Strauss but credited to Bryan Adams... Plenty of stuff in it though, including pics, news, results, training, and interesting Hempel info. Roberto HerasOfficial site of the 2000 Vuelta a Espana winner. Heras switched from Kelme to US Postal at the conclusion of the 2000 season to become Lance Armstrong's super domestique. Neat, functional site with some nice pics and brief bio/palmarès. Stephane HeulotNeat, official site, detailing the lengthy career of this consistent French stage racer (and former national champion), who enjoyed 3 days in yellow in the 1996 Tour. The key feature is his diary, which is quite an entertaining read if you can understand Danish. Mari HoldenMari Holden's official site, and as well-written and thoughtful as you'd expect from a philosophy major. Cool fact: After winning silver at Sydney, Holden was mystified to find herself being shadowed by two big blokes, who turned out to be her athlete security bodyguards. Chris HoyThe official site for British Track Sprinter, Chris Hoy, winner of Olympic and World Silver medals in the past two years. The site is fairly basic, but there are some good photos and his full CV. Jan HrukaAnother Jan, although not as well-known as Jan the German. This is the official site for the talented time-trial specialist from Czechoslovakia. It is very comprehensive, and includes his biography, chat forum, palmarès, photos, his bicycle profile and some interviews. But wait, there's more - you can even view or download his heart rate data for specific races, and Jan will throw in a free set of steak knives, all for $49.95. OK, so I lied - you can only do the first bit. In English and Czech. Clara HughesAthlete extraordinaire, Canadian Clara Hughes, can do it all - whether it be speed skating at the Salt Lake City Winter Games, or dicing it up with the best sprinters in the world in Atlantic. A simple site, but plenty of stuff to keep you occupied during those innumerable down-times we all tend to have at work. This site is more of a guestbook, with a few photos thrown in. (In Norwegian) This site is in English, and describes Thor's exploits as a pro with Credit Agricole. Included are a detailed biography, palmarès, photos, news, and of course, his diary. The results section is quite detailed, and gives the UCI points earned at each race. Generally speaking, the best parts of a rider's website is their diary, and Todd's relaxed perspective of the US 'cross is both funny and refreshing. And if you're up for more reading, Todd's other half also writes a diary on his site. One (important) thing missing is a bio, a must for any fan who wants to know the man behind the lycra.
