Race Report

Italian Andrea Tafi (Mapei-GB) won the 45th edition of the Coppa Sabatini, donderdag betwist rondom Pisa over 202 km. He held out fellow Italians Alessandro Bertolini and Davide Rebellin to win the three -up sprint. The race was highlighted by a 146 km long attack by the Italians Carlo Finco and Marco Fincato. Around 20 riders did not finish the race. Johan Museeuw rode fluently in the lead until about 15 kms from the finish. The World Champion then hit the wall with hunger knock.

Frank Vandenbroucke found the tempo very fast and stopped around the half way mark. "The condition of Vandenbroucke is not what we would desire" said Patrick Lefevere, director-sportif of Mapei-GB. "He has to do more riding. Frank will then have a small rest before the Worlds".
