Stage 2 Report
Italian rider Federico Colonna, from team Asics, has
become the new leader of la Vuelta Ciclista a Galicia,
after finishing second on the second stage
(Ferrol-Monforte de Lemos), which was won by Italian
Silvio Martinello, del Saeco. Today's 107km stage
started at 1PM in the streets of Ferrol and proceeded
slowly for the first 20km. The peloton got active with
the arrival of the first slopes of the climb of Igrexa
Feita, a category 2 where Francisco Cabello, from Team
Kelme-Costa Blanca, imposed a strong rhythm, although
Italian Gianluca Bortolami, from Team Festina-Lotus
was the first one to get across the top. This ascent
made an initial selection of 22 riders, where all the
important riders of the race were included. But Team
Euskadi didn't have any riders in that group, so they
worked really hard until they caught that breakaway.
There was again a battle in the peloton when Fabio
Roscioli, from Team Asics, took off by himself until
he reached a maximum advantage of 1 minute, until ONCE
and Euskadi got in front and caught him. Jan Svorada,
the overall leader at the start of the race took
second and third place at the intermediate sprints
and added 3 bonus seconds to his advantage. Then on
the first slopes of the climb of the Oural, a category
2, another select group was formed with Tafi in front
followed by Petito. The peloton reacted again and they
were caught. Then with 20km to go, a few riders tried
lone breakaways, like Alvaro Gonzalez de Galdeano &
Gianni Bugno. Then overall leader until then, Jan
Svorada, stayed behind and lost more than 10 minutes
by the finish. In the last segment the Kelme-Costa
Blanca rider, Francisco Cabello, attempted an escape
but was neutralized by the pull from Saeco, so the
stage was decided in a long sprint, which was won by
Silvio Martinello.

Stage 3a Report
Jan Svorada, rider
for Team Mapei, won today the sprint for the 3rd stage
of la Vuelta a Galicia, over a 97.7km route between
Monforte de Lemos (Lugo) & Orense. Andrea Tafi becomes
the new temporary overall leader, thanks to two bonus
seconds that he achieved with a second place at the
intermediate sprint at Untes. The definite overall
classification for the day will be known this
afternoon after a 13.7km ITT on the streets of Orense.
The first part of the stage was quiet and there were
many flat tires due to the bad shape of the roads.
Gianluca Bortolami crowned the Alto de Chantada, a
category 3 and Colombian Rofin Ramirez was second.
Then on the first slopes of the climb of Pereira, also
a category 3, Bortolami and Marcelino Garcia Alonso
escaped, but the peloton caught them after one
kilometer. The last 50km were a series of escapes,
which caused the peloton to speed up. Melchor Mauri
grabbed the three bonus seconds of bonus when he took
the intermediate sprint at Untes, followed by Tafi &
Colonna. Most of the peloton reached the finish line
together which was settled in the sprint taken by
Svorada.

Stage 3b Report
Spaniard Aitor
Garmendia, from Team ONCE, won the second sector of
the third stage of la Vuelta ciclista a Galicia, a
13.7km individual time trial which has placed him as
the overall leader. Garmendia, who covered the ITT in
17 minutes with 13 seconds, beat Italian Gianluca
Bortomali (Lotus) by 15 seconds, Frenchman Armand de
las Cuevas (Banesto) by 19 seconds and Spaniard
Melchor Mauri (Once) by 21 seconds. The route had a
lot of difficulty and riders like Italian Andrea Tafi,
lost a lot of time and the possibility to wear the
leader's yellow jersey. One of the surprises was not
to find Kelme's Juan Carlos Dominguez, in a higher
placing.
