Spaniard Aitor Garmendia (ONCE) and Russian Eugeni Berzin (Batik del Monte) are the favorites for the overall victory at the XV vuelta al Alentejo, which will be disputed between the 23 and 27 of the month in the roads of Southern Portugal. The race will count on the participation of 15 teams, witha total of 120 cyclists. La Vuelta al Alentejo was won by Miguel Indurain last year.

Report Stage 2

Lithuanian Saulius Sarkaukas, from Team Recer Boavista, becomes the new overall leader at la Vuelta al Alentejo when he won the second stage in a sprint finish. Sarlaukas spent 4 hours, 37 minutes and 25 seconds in covering the 187 kms between Mertola and Montemor o Novo, beating in the final sprint Spaniard Javier Mauleon (ONCE) and Portuguese Gonzalo Amorim (Progecer-Tavira). Some of the favorites came in at 2 seconds from the winner, like Portuguese Vitor Gamito (Toscaf), Russian Eugeni Berzin (Batik-Del Monte) and Spaniard Aitor Garmendia (ONCE). Those three riders stay at 2 seconds from the leader Sarkauskas, who has a total time of 9:04.27 hours. The 'Queen Stage' will be disputed tomorrow, over 186 kms. between Arraiolois and Castelo de Vide, which will go over two category one climbs and one category three for the mountain prize.
