Frigid temperatures, wind, but thankfully none of the forecasted rain, greeted the riders and fans to today's festival and downtown criterium at the Redlands Classic. Thousand of fans braved the unseasonable weather to check out the event, which got going in the early morning hours with some public crits. Once the public races finished, the course was changed into one of the most technical courses on the circuit.
"I think this is the most technical course of the year," said women's winner Nicole Freedman. "There are a lot of turns that are more than 90 degrees and really tight. The last three turns are all acute angles and off camber, so it's hard."
Between races, fans could check out numerous booths and events from both cycling companies and local sponsors. The races, while having almost no effect on the GC, were fast, furious, and fun to watch.
|
"I don't know what Saturn was doing," said Diet Rite's Tina Mayolo-Pic. "I guess keeping anyone from breaking away. It was really hard and really fast. They were really driving it. I was struggling."
Saturn was taking no chances on the breakaway ability of Genevieve Jeanson and went out hard, blowing the race to pieces in matter of minutes. Within a few laps, numerous splits had been made in the field. The pace remained so fast for so long, that no group was able to get back on. Saturn's colors stayed in front until it was so late in the race that an attack would never get away.
|
Ina Teutenberg then attacked until she blew, setting the stage for an open sprint finish for anyone that was able to hang on. In the end, it was Rona's team leader, Jeanson, setting up teammate Nicole Freedman for the win. She was followed by Diet Rite's Tina Mayolo-Pic and AC Mexiquence's Belem Guererro, with Jeanson a few places back, pumping her fists into the air as though she had won the stage herself.
Describing the final lap, Freedman said, "There was a crash out there, after the first turn, and three people sort of got ahead and made a little gap. Then Genevieve was right there and pulled me right up to the front group. And once she did that, I'm like, I know I can do this."
Mayolo-Pic came off the final turn in great position but couldn't get around her, "I wasn't really on it (Freedman's wheel). She saw the crash go and took off. I was just following her and I thought I could get around her, and I couldn't get around. And, I was like 'Oh, she's so fast.'"
|
Race leader Chris Horner had called it "a day for the crowds" in response to what possible danger today's stage held for his GC chances. These are the words of a rider in top form who's confident in his team and, sure enough, he and his Prime Alliance teammates made him look like a prophet. No escape could dream of picking up more than a double prime before the Prime Alliance train would form and quickly scoop them up.
In spite of the lack of GC drama, the stage was very fast and only around half the field was able to hang on to the finish. With 3 laps to go, Mercury went to the front, trying to set the stage for their sprinter Gordon Fraser. But Charles Dionne played the spoiler and picked up a huge win for 7up/Nutra Fig, and a personal birthday present. Third place was even more of a surprise as Mexican national Miguel Meza, riding for Team Dare edged out Postal's Tony Cruz.
|
About the final lap, Dionne said, "Greg Henderson kind of helped me. Him and Gord were looking at each other with two corners to go. I just passed by and never looked back." Fraser said he was in perfect position but "Unfortunately, I didn't quite have enough gas. Charles did a good move, he cut across my front wheel and I had to put on my brakes, and I lost all momentum. And, I'll remember that for the next sprint."
Then again, it may have been something else, "I just turned 22 yesterday," beamed Dionne. "They made a good cake for me, that's why I won today."
Also of note were two Mexican Nationals on the podiums today. Asked how it would affect cycling in Mexico, "I think it's going to be good news for Mexican cycling, Mexican sport. We aren't a big cycling country, like in Europe or in the United States, but still we have a lot of strong riders."

Charles Dionne, 1st stage
"The last few laps you need to fight to be in a good position. My goal was to be in the first five riders with a lap to go, and then attack for the line."
"This is my first win here, so I am really happy."
On 7up/Nutra Fig:
"I'm very happy with the results we have so far."
Gordon Fraser, 2nd in stage
"Unfortunately, I was only left with Henk, with three-quarters of a lap to go. If I had one more guy I think I might have been in a little better shape. I still can't complain too much. They did what they needed to get me to win. Unfortunately I just didn't come through this time, but if they do that for me in the next few races for me I will be very happy. Henk seems to be firing, everyone seems to be motivated. You know, we had a hard race. Hopefully tomorrow we can have another good showing before this is all over."
Miguel Meza, 3rd in stage
"I actually have a contract with Coppi, a professional team in Italy. I needed a team for Redlands and my brother races for this team (D.A.R.E.), a local Southern California team. I mainly race in Europe, but my family is in Pomona and I want to be with them and race here. The team is a small team, but I still get some good support from them. A lot of it was psychological and they motivated me."
About having two Mexicans on the podium:
"I think it's going to be good news for Mexican cycling, Mexican sport."
"We aren't a big cycling country, like in Europe or in the United States, but still we have a lot of strong riders. We don't have a lot of support, so we have to integrate with other countries. That is what we are doing. I am very happy, because in other countries we are getting better support than in our home country and they get a chance to race."
Nicole Freedman, 1st in stage
About Cyclingnews:
"It's the only web site I actually know how to get to."
On her strategy:
"It worked out well, obviously. You know we had a lot to protect, with a rider in 2nd and 3rd. But, this is an important stage for us, and for me, my whole family was here."
"I was just trying to stay right on the Saturn train. There were a few attacks and I had to go with them, and then I made a couple, but not quite strong enough."
About the last lap:
"With three corners to go I was in the front. It wasn't ideal, but there's nothing else to do. So, it was like, better go fast."
On what the win says for Team Rona:
"I think it's really important. Last year it was known as Team Genevieve and there were some really good riders there. And the riders are all stronger now, and there are some new riders, and I think it says a lot for who we are."
Weather:
"It was fine. I think that if it had rained it would have made a big difference."
Jeanson's finishing celebration for Freedman:
"I think that she is the most generous champion you can ever find. She's really into the team. Like yesterday, I think it spoke really highly for her; she had the yellow jersey and she let her teammates go for it. It says a lot. She's a really good person."
Tina Mayolo-Pic, 2nd in stage
"I was chasing Nicole. With this crit and all those turns, if you get a little bit back, you get that accordion effect and it's twice as hard further back."
Belem Guererro, 3rd stage (through translator)
"I wanted to be in the front group. I marked the best women and tried to follow them, especially the Rona team and the Canadian champion."
On Redlands:
"I like it a lot. There is a lot of spirit and a lot of competition."
On the weather:
"I come from the mountains of Mexico, so I am used to cold conditions like this."
Giana Roberge, Saturn Team Director
"The strategy was to keep it really fast so that Judith could sit in fourth or fifth position and not have to jump from any corners. We were trying to keep it as smooth as possible so she didn't have to close any gaps so that tomorrow she comes in really well rested. The easiest way for us to do that is to ride a very hard tempo so that it never swells.
"You notice that Lyne was with her the whole time, Lyne was her little Lieutenant. Helping her move around, and we just kept it really fast. We didn't want a stage win, no need to be greedy today. So, that was the goal."
"There was a point in time when it was getting a little slow and the girls were getting a little tired. I said, 'Ina, if you can go ahead and attack.' That's always a way to keep it fast. And it's always good to give it a go once in a while. And then when we saw it was going to be a field sprint, just keep Judith safe. That's when Ina came off the back, so she could rest for tomorrow. The faster the race it is, the safer it is, honestly. If they are good enough to be in the front, then they are safe, generally."
