With no prologue to get them into the swing, riders in the 2002 Skilled Tour of Tasmania get straight into it with short but fairly hilly 97km first stage from Hobart Wrest Point Casino to Kingston.

The peloton will first pass through Kingston on its way down the coast before cutting across the peninsula to Margate, and the day's first sprint outside Margate Station. The riders then turn back inland toward Huonville, passing over the day's first KOM stage, a cat 3 and then the next sprint, at Cygnet.

Huonville sees another sprint, then the day's largest obstacle, a Cat 2 climb, 17km from the finish. Any climbers who escape on the hill will have their work cut out to stay away on the run to the finish outside the Kingston Hotel.
